Mason chapter of National Society of Black Engineers hosts week of career and social activities

The George Mason 麻豆国产 chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) has been busy with a week鈥檚 worth of activities that celebrate and connect aspiring engineers of color.聽

National Society of Black Engineers Week聽offers聽an array of activities that foster increased聽job and聽networking opportunities, as well as additional academic support.聽

, who serves as the Mason鈥檚 chapter鈥檚聽intel聽advisor, said聽NSBE Week is about raising awareness about the organization聽across campus聽and聽the support and resources the organization can provide engineering majors.

鈥淚t's not just for Black and African American engineers but all engineers,鈥 said Jones, an associate professor in the聽聽within the聽. 鈥淚t's about building a聽community and enhancing skills to prepare students for their next chapter after they leave Mason.鈥

Virtual events this week included a聽game night and a movie night with聽the new film, 鈥淐oming 2 America,鈥 as well as a general organizational meeting and information about the upcoming virtual NSBE聽convention.

The ongoing global pandemic makes this year鈥檚 events all the more important, Mason Chapter President聽Sa铆d聽Saidahmed, a senior computer science major, explained.聽

鈥淣SBE Week is important because it connects students, especially during times like these where everyone is so distant,鈥 he said.聽鈥淪ince so many students are stressed out, NSBE Week is a way for everyone to connect and to destress.鈥澛

鈥淚 hope that we have high engagement with聽our current members and gain new members as well,鈥澛燼dded聽Alissa Wells, the Mason聽chapter鈥檚聽academic聽excellence聽chair.聽鈥淥verall, I鈥檓 excited for us to get the opportunity to get to know our members better.鈥

Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, the National Society of Black Engineers includes 24,000 members from more than 700 active chapters in the United States and abroad.

The organization鈥檚 stated mission is 鈥渢o increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.鈥 The NSBE is committed to helping the United States begin annually producing 10,000 black engineers by 2025.
