For her leadership and compassion during challenging times, Kulok has been recognized as July鈥檚 Employee of the Month.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淪hira has been a steadfast leader at the CDC, dealing with complex public health guidelines, concerned parents, challenging staff issues, and children returning to care after long periods of time at home,鈥� said Sophia Balakian, an assistant professor in Mason鈥檚 School of Integrative Studies and CDC parent. 鈥淭ime and again, she shows that her number one concern is the well-being鈥攑hysical, psychological, and socio-emotional鈥攐f children under her care. This means that the parents are freed to do their work with peace of mind.鈥�</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淪hira and the staff at the CDC were immensely impactful and helpful to my family,鈥� said Philip Wilkerson III, an employer engagement consultant at Mason鈥檚 麻豆国产 Career Services. 鈥溌槎构� youngest, Miles, started attending the CDC at the height of the pandemic in Fall 2020. It was comforting to know that while we all were struggling with the demands of work and uncertainty, he was safe and cared for during the day鈥�. The CDC provides a space of kindness, compassion, learning, and confidence that I know will have a lifelong effect on my son.鈥� </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淪hira has embodied the Mason value of 鈥榯hriving together鈥� by creating a Mason CDC community essential to the well-being of its students and their caregivers,鈥� said Jenna Krall, assistant professor in the Department of Global and Community Health and CDC parent.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淥ver the past three years, I have developed great respect for the care and dedication Shira shows while running the CDC,鈥� said community member Hunter Brown, the parent of two children at the center. 鈥淪hira has eased concerns of parents by providing transparent and consistent communication in the face of significant uncertainty.鈥�</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淪hira鈥檚 leadership has tremendously helped the Child Development Center get one of the highest ratings in the area,鈥� says CDC parent Katherine Fakhri. 鈥淎nd the long waitlist is a prime example of how popular this program is.鈥�</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span>How did you come to Mason:</span></strong> 聽</span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>After working in a large corporate early childhood organization for 12 years, I searched for an organization that offered a smaller community and opportunities for me to develop curriculum and programming together with my team. The opening at Mason's CDC came just at this time and seemed perfect. My experiences at the center have offered me the space to strengthen my skills as a leader, shape a program based in research and high standards that support children's development, and raise awareness to the importance of prioritizing the well-being of both children and educators through mindfulness and nature-based play.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span>Best day on the job:</span></strong>聽 </span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>My best days on the job are when we are well staffed, and my team feels at ease and supported. When I go home knowing we all experienced a sense of fulfillment during the day, I know we did our job well.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span>What do you like best about working at Mason:</span></strong> 聽</span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>There's a lot I enjoy about working for Mason. I enjoy walking the beautiful campus during a break in the day, but what I enjoy most is the sense of community. Wherever I go on campus, or whichever department I contact for assistance, I feel like I belong, and I feel supported. Of course, the best community of all is at the CDC. Tyree attends George Mason 麻豆国产鈥檚 Winter Graduation on Dec. 16, she will be wearing a stole that shows the flags of her native Romania and Germany, where she lived as a teen. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>It has been a long journey to a bachelor鈥檚 degree for the divorced mother of two, but in many ways, Tyree is just getting started. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>A lead teacher at the Mason鈥檚 Child Development Center, where she has worked for more than 20 years, Tyree used her tuition credits to earn this degree, taking one class a semester while working full-time. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淚 fell in love,鈥� she said of taking the job at Mason in 2001. 鈥淔or some reason, the job鈥攁nd Mason in general鈥攈as been such a big part of home for me.鈥�</span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淒orothea鈥檚 road to graduation has been unique as she has balanced family, career, and life in general,鈥� said Erin Geiger, assistant director of </span>Mason鈥檚 Child Development Center<span>. 鈥淪he epitomizes the Mason spirit, connecting with others through her various roles on campus with her warm and energetic personality and caring for our littlest Patriots at the center. I feel privileged to call her both colleague and friend and could not be more excited for her as she celebrates this incredible accomplishment!鈥�</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span>Tyree began working at the center when it was in trailers in Patriot Village before it moved to its current location. And she is beloved by many Mason families whose children have moved through the center over the years.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Tyree left Romania as a pre-teen after the revolution and lived in Germany with her family as immigrants. She came to the United States as a 19-year-old Army wife and began her career working in a preschool in Fort Hood, Texas. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>Now a U.S. citizen, she said recent events in this country, particularly those on Jan. 6, have brought on flashbacks of that turbulent time in Romanian history under Nicolae Ceau葯escu. </span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淒uring the Romanian revolution in 鈥�89, I was just 11, having to hide and barricade, waking up to gunfire,鈥� said Tyree. 鈥淵ou can鈥檛 process that kind of trauma as a child. I鈥檝e only recently been able to process it.鈥�</span></span></p> <p><span><span>She said that she has been able use her Mason courses, such as HIST 100 The History of Western Civilization, which she took with Mason adjunct and alum Wes Fleming, to help her process that experience.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淚t was just right outside of the scope of the class, but Professor Fleming allowed me to write about it,鈥� said Tyree of the revolution. 鈥淚t was awesome to actually take a scholarly look at the past because your memories as a child can trick you.鈥�</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Tyree makes connections between that childhood and her drive to make a difference.</span></span></p> <p><span><span>鈥淢y dad was 39 when he voted for the first time in his life,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 remember to this day how excited he was. Being active in my community is very important to me.鈥�</span></span></p> <p><span><span>Tyree is already talking about a double major for her graduate studies and thinking about her future PhD. She is interested in many big picture things, such as criminal justice, social justice, and mental health.
