Engineering Ranks Top 3 in Virginia and Top 50 Nationally

The College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason ranks among the top 3 colleges in Virginia across all six engineering categories with civil engineering rising 14 spots to 73rd nationally and 51st among publics, and computer engineering climbing 20 spots among publics to 42nd. Nationally, George Mason’s systems engineering program ranks in the top 50, placing 37th overall and 27th among publics.

George Mason plays a key role in strengthening Virginia’s position as a national leader in engineering education, with top-ranked programs in multiple disciplines. George Mason was one of only four Virginia universities recognized in bioengineering, civil engineering, and systems engineering, and one of five Virginia universities honored in overall engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and dispute resolution programs.

"With 13% of the world’s data centers based in Northern Virginia, the university continues to expand its engineering and computing programs, and state-of-the-art facilities to support the region’s workforce requirements for skilled professionals,” said Ken Ball, dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. ”George Mason is home to the first school of computing in the commonwealth and just announced Virginia’s only master's degree in artificial intelligence.”

Additionally, earlier this year, two of the college’s online programs made their debut by earning top national rankings in U.S. News. The master’s in industrial engineering debuted as the No. 1 in Virginia and 10th nationally, and the master’s in IT for veterans ranked 21st nationally and 13th among publics.

George Mason also recently opened its Life Sciences and Engineering Building at its Science and Technology Campus. These spaces provide students with hands-on experience in cutting-edge fields such as bioengineering, mechanical engineering, and robotics, equipping them to meet industry demands.

Law School Retains Strong Rankings and Employment Outcomes

The Antonin Scalia Law School ranked 2nd among Virginia law schools, 31st among all U.S. law schools, and 12th among public schools. The part-time program was ranked 4th nationally among public law schools. The school ranked 11th nationally in the number of graduates employed in federal clerkships.

“Scalia Law is ranked 3rd among the 16 schools in the DMV,” said Ken Randall, Allison and Dorothy Rouse Dean and George Mason �鶹�� Foundation Professor of Law. “�鶹�� No. 1 employment ranking among metro-DC schools highlights the marketability of our graduates. The faculty, staff, and students deserve thanks and recognition.”

As the legal profession continues to grow—with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 5% increase in lawyer employment by 2033, or approximately 36,000 jobs per year over the next eight years, Scalia Law is well-positioned to prepare students to enter an expanding field and meet the rising demand for qualified legal professionals.

Nursing Ranks Number 1 in Virginia

The School of Nursing within the state’s first College of Public Health set the standard for nursing education in Virginia, ranking first in the state for both its master’s in nursing and doctor of nursing practice (DNP) programs. Nationally, the doctor of nursing practice program placed in the top 6% according to U.S. News & World Report, while both programs ranked among the top 10 at public universities.

“The rankings reflect George Mason’s leadership in public health education and commitment to innovation,” said College of Public Health Dean Melissa Perry. “This dedication is exemplified by the one-of-a-kind interprofessional curriculum offered in the Lab for Immersive Technologies and Simulation, providing hands-on experience that enhances students’ expertise and readiness in the field.”

Schar School’s Public Affairs Ranks Number 1 in Virginia

The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason continues to excel, with all of its ranked programs placing in the top 50 nationally and the top 25 among public universities. Most notably, the school's ranking among public affairs programs rose to No. 1 in Virginia, ranking 36th nationally and 24th among publics.

“Students choose the Schar School the strong depth of our faculty expertise and the opportunity to interact with thought leaders in various fields of policy and government studies,” said Mark Rozell, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government. “These rankings reflect the rising reputation of the Schar School for high-quality degree programs that prepare students for success.”

The school is ranked 4th nationally in homeland security and 48th in political science, making George Mason one of only two Virginia universities recognized in both fields. Additionally, the school is the only Virginia university ranked for nonprofit management and holds its position at 13th nationally and 10th among publics. The school also ranks 33rd nationally and 25th among publics for public management and leadership, as well as 31st nationally and 17th among publics for public policy analysis.

Growing as a Top 50 �鶹��

Other highly ranked programs at George Mason among the Top 50 among public universities nationwide include computer science (35th), health care management (16th), history (36th), public health (40th), and part-time MBA and economics (both 48th).

“George Mason’s representation in these rankings underscores its role as a leading institution and top choice for today’s career-focused students, both in Virginia and nationally,” said Provost James Antony. “The university’s strong performance in these programs highlights its ability to produce highly skilled graduates ready to make an impact in their fields, with the majority staying in the commonwealth after graduation.”

The U.S. Department of State has named George Mason �鶹�� a “Top Producing Institution” of Fulbright U.S. Scholars in 2024-25. The university has more Fulbrights this academic year—eight—than in any year in its history.

The “top-producing” designation reflects George Mason’s “deep commitment to international exchange and to building lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries,” Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Scott Weinhold said in a letter informing the university of the honor.

The Fulbright Program was founded in 1946 to increase understanding between people in the United States and 160 countries through academic and cultural exchange. You can find the complete list of 2024-25 Fulbright “Top Producing Institutions” here.

The eight honorees this year come from seven George Mason schools and colleges: Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera (Schar School), Carolyn Drews-Botsch (College of Public Health), Amy Fowler (College of Science), Chawky Frenn (Center of Visual and Performing Arts), David J. Gerleman (College of Humanities and Social Sciences), Jennifer Leeman (CHSS), Linda J. Mann (Carter School) and Risto Marttinen (College of Education and Human Development). Frenn also was honored as a Fulbright in 2017-18.

These faculty members are sharing and growing their expertise in Hungary, Ireland, Finland, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Spain.

“This recognition is all about the excellence and dedication of George Mason’s faculty,” said Provost James Antony. “Earning a record number of Fulbright awards in a single year speaks to the incredible work our scholars are doing—not just in their research, but in connecting with colleagues around the world, exchanging ideas, and bringing new perspectives back to our students. That’s what makes George Mason special: a faculty committed to making an impact, here at home and across the globe.”

Of George Mason’s 103 Fulbrights, according to the Fulbright Scholar Directory, 27 have come in the past seven years. The previous high for Fulbrights in a year for George Mason was five in 1994-95. George Mason’s first Fulbright was history professor Ernest Cassara in 1975-76, who taught at the �鶹�� of Munich.

George Mason has hosted 98 Fulbrights, according to the organization’s website, including six this academic year.

George Mason �鶹�� continues to distinguish itself as a top academic institution and a top 50 public university. Today, U.S. News & World Report released their 2025 Best Online Programs rankings, highlighting the university’s exceptional offerings across several disciplines, especially for veterans.

George Mason advanced its rankings in nearly every online master’s degree program where it was included. The university is one of just five institutions in Virginia ranked in at least nine of the 13 categories where it is included, earning No. 1 rankings in four of those categories, more than any other university in the state for these categories.

“These rankings affirm that George Mason is a leader in Virginia in producing graduates for high-demand industries critical to the growth and prosperity of the commonwealth,” said George Mason President Gregory Washington. “We achieve these outcomes by partnering with industry leaders to develop academic programs that prepare graduates for a rapidly evolving workforce.”

A Leader for Military-Affiliated Students

With more than 4,700 students identifying as active-duty service members, veterans, or dependents, George Mason remains a vital resource for Virginia’s largest military-connected community. This year, approximately 20% of the university’s incoming freshman, transfer, and graduate cohorts have military connections, reinforcing the university’s reputation as a top destination for military-affiliated students.

George Mason earned the top spot in Virginia and nationally among public universities for its MBA program for veterans, and was first in Virginia and the Washington, D.C., metropolitan region for its master’s in nursing for veterans.

In September 2024, U.S. News & World Report ranked George Mason as one of the state’s best colleges for veterans. The university was also recognized with “Gold” status as a top Military Friendly �鶹��, underscoring its commitment to supporting those who have served.

“We are proud to serve a region that is home to a significant number of military members, veterans, and their families,” said Jennifer Connors, George Mason’s director of Office of Military Services. “At George Mason, we are committed to providing resources to support their unique needs. It is our duty to honor their service to our nation by empowering them to excel academically and professionally.”

Strong Performances Across Disciplines

In addition to its programs for veterans, George Mason’s online master’s programs excelled in several other areas: education, nursing, business, and engineering.

Northern Virginia boasts some of the nation’s top public school systems, and George Mason playing a significant role in that success. Approximately half of the region’s K-12 school administrators and an estimated one third of its teachers hold degrees or certificates from George Mason.

In the face of a national shortage of special education teachers, the university’s master’s in special education program stands out, ranking No. 1 in both Virginia and in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and 5th nationally.

“We are thrilled to see our special education program recognized among the top five in the country,” said Ingrid Guerra-López, dean of the College of Education and Human Development. “This achievement is a reflection of our faculty’s remarkable expertise, dedication, and innovative approaches to preparing graduates to make a lasting impact in classrooms and communities.”

The School of Nursing within George Mason’s College of Public Health saw significant advancements in its rankings. The master’s in nursing program ranked No. 1 in Virginia, climbing up eight spots to 41st nationally (34th among public universities). Additionally, the Master’s in Nursing for Veterans program rose to 14th nationally (up from 18th), and 9th among public universities (up from 11th).

“Through hands-on clinical training and cutting-edge simulation technologies, our students are equipped with unmatched knowledge and cultural competencies,” said College of Public Health dean Melissa J. Perry. “�鶹�� graduates are among the most well-prepared nurses in the country.”

The Costello College of Business earned significant accolades, with its MBA for veterans program climbing to 30th (up from 41st) among public universities and 34th nationally (up from 50th). The MBA program also rose to 41st among public universities (up from 54th), 55th nationally (up from 74th), while its non-MBA program ranked 39th among public universities (up from 44th) and 56th nationally (up from 62nd).

George Mason’s College of Engineering and Computing saw two of its newest programs make strong debuts. The master’s in industrial engineering is best in Virginia and 10th nationally. The master’s in engineering for veterans’ program ranked 29th nationally. The master’s in engineering program climbed 22 spots to 45th nationally, and 38th among public universities (up from 51st).

The new master’s in IT for veterans program also made a strong first impression, ranking 21st nationally and 13th among public universities.

A Commitment to Excellence in Online Education

The strong performance of George Mason’s online programs aligns with the university’s mission to support students where they are. The flexible class offerings are a welcome boon to the university’s large number of post-traditional students, many of whom are professionals who continue to work full-time jobs and family responsibilities while pursuing academic goals to enhance their careers.

George Mason �鶹�� is Virginia’s leading university for value and upward mobility, and ranked in the top 25 nationally for innovation according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2025 released today. George Mason also achieved a new distinction from U.S. News, as a top 20 school nationally and No. 1 in Virginia for internships, reflecting its commitment to developing the talent needed for today’s dynamic workforce demands.

Additionally, the university ranks as a top 50 public university nationally in the Wall Street Journal’s Best Colleges in the U.S..

“As Virginia’s largest and most diverse public university, George Mason is a leader in advancing Virginia as a top state in business and education,” said George Mason President Gregory Washington. “George Mason serves families by providing flexibility and affordability of educational excellence and serves the commonwealth by driving innovation for economic development. Most of our graduates stay in Virginia and around the Washington, D.C. region, building a strong career-ready pipeline critical to regional and state prosperity.”

Student success and college affordability

George Mason is ranked No. 1 in Virginia for upward mobility across all rankings that measure social mobility, and is No. 1 among public universities nationwide according to U.S. News, 30th with Washington Monthly �鶹�� Rankings, and 58th with the Wall Street Journal.

George Mason is also ranked as the No. 1 best value school in Virginia by the Wall Street Journal (55th among public universities nationally) and 13th by Washington Monthly among public universities in the Southeast. Best value rankings highlight universities that offer a strong education at an affordable cost with low debt, factoring in financial aid and post-graduation success.

This year, George Mason debuted 20th in the U.S. News ranking for internships/co-ops, reflecting its strong business and government partnerships to prepare students for successful careers and enhance their college experience. These rankings showcase universities that enable students to apply classroom learning in professional environments, boosting their skills and career prospects.

“These strong rankings on student internships and co-ops underscore our commitment to be recognized as a top research university that also prioritizes students’ experiential learning," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jim Antony. “George Mason students consistently share that our faculty, who are leaders in their fields, offer substantive experiential learning opportunities, all of which translates into long-term positive outcomes and career success.”

In addition to internships, George Mason provides students with career resources, such as multiple career fairs, professional development opportunities, career preparation courses, and job placement support. With graduation rates above the national average, 88% of 2023 George Mason graduates report job success related to their career goals, earning a median salary of $74,000, and 83% remain in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. Here is a list of companies that have hired George Mason graduates.

This fall, the university enrolled its largest and most academically talented freshmen class to date. About one in four students at George Mason is a first-generation college student, and a slightly higher percentage qualify for Federal Pell Grants. In the past decade, George Mason has granted over 90,000 degrees, more than any other public four-year university in the commonwealth.

Overall rankings

U.S. News ranks George Mason tied for 52nd among public universities nationwide. The Wall Street Journal puts George Mason as a top 50 public university, ranking it 30th (up from 33rd) and Washington Monthly ranks the university 57th among public universities (up from 60th).

Among all universities, both public and private, George Mason earns a tied ranking 109th from U.S. News, 76th with the Wall Street Journal (up from 95th), and 91st with Washington Monthly.

U.S. News also ranked several of George Mason’s undergraduate programs in the top 100 nationally, including business, economics, computer science, engineering, and psychology, and named George Mason as one of the best colleges for veterans.

Commitment to free speech

These high-profile rankings follow other recent accolades that highlight George Mason as one of America’s most inclusive and welcoming universities. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranked George Mason 16th for its commitment to freedom of speech. George Mason’s Patriot Plan for Community Safety and Well-Being includes guidelines for campus safety for maintaining the rights, privacy, and dignity of all in our community. Campus Pride also gave George Mason a 5-Star rating, the only public university in Virginia, for offering a safe and welcoming campus to the LGBTQ+ community.

CNBC has named Virginia America’s Top State for Business in 2024, and the No. 1 state for education, dual distinctions that highlight George Mason �鶹��’s impact as the largest and most innovative public university in Virginia and a top 50 public university nationally.

Virginia finished in the top half of all 10 of the CNBC study’s weighted categories used to determine the state business rankings. In addition to being tops in education, CNBC rated Virginia infrastructure (3rd), workforce (9th), economy (11th), quality of life (19th), cost of doing business (24th), technology and innovation (15th), business friendliness (5th), access to capital (8th), and cost of living (19th).

“You can directly tie George Mason �鶹��’s impact on the state to criteria throughout the latest CNBC Best State for Business ranking,” George Mason �鶹�� President Gregory Washington said. “George Mason provides opportunities for students of all backgrounds, prepares the state’s workforce in high-demand fields, provides guidance to business owners around the state through Mason Enterprise, and attracts and keeps more talent in Virginia than peer universities. When you look at these rankings that cite Virginia as No. 1 in the country for business and education, you can’t help but see George Mason.”

Education

The Wall Street Journal and Forbes rank George Mason as a top 50 public university nationally.
Through the Early Identification Program, George Mason works with middle and high school students who aspire to be the first in their family to attend college. George Mason also offers students direct admission and partners with Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) and other community colleges around the state through the Mason Virginia Promise to provide direct admission pathways so students save time and money toward earning a degree. Virginians who want help to start a business can work with Mason Enterprise and its network of Small Business Development Centers.
George Mason has launched the Accelerated College and Employability Skills (ACCESS) Academy with NOVA and Loudoun County Public Schools, and with several high schools has launched the Shenandoah Valley Rural Regional College Partnership Laboratory School for Data Science, Computing, and Applications.

Technology and Innovation

U.S. News ranks George Mason as the No. 1 public university in the state for innovation.
George Mason research has more than 100 unique industry partners and more than 230 unique university partners. Of those 100 unique industry partners, 13 are Fortune 500 companies. George Mason also has partnerships with 118 of the 146 R1 universities.
The College of Engineering and Computing enrollment has grown to an all-time high of nearly 11,000 students, or 27% of George Mason’s total student population.
George Mason is about to lead its first NASA mission.
George Mason offers such state-of-the-art facilities as the Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center; the Biomedical Research Lab, one of 12 biosafety level-3 labs in the nation; the Forensic Science Research and Training Laboratory, one of eight “body farms” of its type in the country; and the Nanofabrication Facility, Northern Virginia’s only academic/core clean room facility accessible for workforce training.
In recent years, George Mason started the country’s first cybersecurity engineering program and opened the first College of Public Health and first School of Computing in the state.
George Mason offers an ethics in artificial intelligence (AI) minor, the first such program in the country.

Workforce

In May, more than 10,000 George Mason students, from 114 countries and all 50 states, earned their degrees.
73% of in-state graduates stay in Virginia—3% higher than public four-year institutions in the state—and 29% of out-of-state students remain in Virginia after graduation, 9% higher than the state average.
More than 15,000 internships are posted in George Mason’s database annually, and 89% are open to sophomore and juniors. About 78% are paid internships, and George Mason students have received more than $238,000 toward unpaid internships from �鶹�� Career Services.
George Mason fills critical vacancies in the workforce through the Tech Talent Investment Program, a partnership with the state.

Economy

In the Class of 2024, 41% of undergraduates and 44% of graduate students earned degrees in STEM and health sciences fields.
George Mason has been cited by several publications, including U.S. News & World Report, the Wall Street Journal, and Washington Monthly, as the top public university in Virginia for the upward mobility of its graduates, and the New York Times ranks George Mason the top public university in the state in its economic diversity index.
Mason Enterprise, which operates 25 Small Business Development Centers around the state, is the host to federal, state, and local programs that support a portfolio of more than 30,000 start-ups and small businesses. Last year Mason Enterprise companies received more than $3.7 billion in follow-on funding, and more than 40,000 entrepreneurs, small business owners, students, and research faculty attended 900+ workshops and educational programs, received individual counseling, were assisted with product development, resided in one of five incubators, or received intellectual property advice.
88% of Class of 2023 survey respondents report they are employed in positions related to their career goals.

Quality of Life

George Mason, the most diverse public university in the state, is in the top 10 for the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) free speech and open inquiry rankings.
George Mason has a 5 Star rating from the Campus Pride Index.
George Mason this spring earned a Gold rating for being a military friendly university, its latest honor for serving the military population. About 1 in 10 George Mason students is active or former military or a military dependent.
George Mason's Center for Community Mental Health is the main training clinic for Mason doctoral candidates in clinical psychology, as well as students in other behavioral health disciplines. CCMH provides evidence-based, accessible, affordable and culturally sensitive therapy and testing services to our Northern Virginia community.
The Mason and Partners (MAP) interprofessional clinics serve the uninsured and refugee community within Prince William and Fairfax counties.
George Mason is the cultural hub of Northern Virginia, offering the community world-class events in the arts, Division I collegiate athletics, youth and family programming, and access to recreational facilities.

Virginia has now topped the CNBC business rankings for the sixth time since 2007 and for the third time in five years.

Student Health Services’ designation for LGBTQ+ health care practices is the latest recognition of George Mason’s inclusive campus environment Shayla Brown Thu, 05/30/2024 - 12:51

George Mason �鶹��’s Student Health Services (SHS) is one of 462 health care facilities to receive the “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality High Performer” designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 2024 Healthcare Equality Index. 

“Medicine in general has a significant history of systemic inequality, so one of the big focuses of my job is to make sure that we are addressing those inequalities and promoting health equity,” said Megan Symanowitz, SHS’s Access to Research and Inclusive Excellence health equity lead nurse. “SHS is very enthusiastic about supporting our LGBTQ+ students and learning more about how to better serve that population.”

This year was George Mason’s first time applying for the designation, said Symanowitz.

“It's something we've been working on at the clinic for years now in collaboration with the LGBTQ+ Resource Center and George Mason’s School of Nursing. They've really helped us to identify areas where we needed to serve this community better,” said Symanowitz, who is also an alumna of the School of Nursing.

For example, acknowledging the pronouns and chosen name of every individual is one area where staff received input and made improvements, she said.

“The center guided us in making in our electronic medical health records, so people are able to self-identify their sexuality, and trans or nonbinary statuses if they want,” said Symanowitz.

“That way from the very first time we interact with a student, we’re addressing them correctly and they're not constantly having to explain themselves.”

Their team also conducts Safe Zone training, name change clinics, trans health workshops, and provides regular updates on the best health practices for the LGBTQ+ community.

This designation, which exemplifies how George Mason facilities go above and beyond the average health care practices of LGBTQ+ patient care in higher education, is one of several inclusive recognitions George Mason has received.

Last year, George Mason was one of 30 universities in the United States and the only Virginia-based institute to be awarded a “best of the best” ranking by Campus Pride.

George Mason also received a five-star Premiere Campus ranking by the Campus Pride Index, the highest possible ranking, said Josh Kinchen, director of LGBTQ+ Resources Center.

According to Forbes Advisor, George Mason is the #1 online LGBTQ+ friendly college of 2024.

“Student Health Services' recent designation, coupled with Forbes Advisor naming us the top LGBTQ-friendly university, really speaks to the efforts of our faculty, staff, and students in making George Mason a place where everyone can be their authentic selves,” said Mary Lucal, vice president and chief human resources officer at George Mason.

As of August 2023, George Mason is one of 20 Division-I institutions to achieve a score of 100 on the Athletic Equity Index, in part due to efforts of the George Mason Athletics LGBTQ+ Student-Athlete Group.

“We often collaborate with athletics and offices like the resources center to expand our audience,” said Jake Kornfeld, a senior government international politics major and co-president of Pride Alliance, a registered student organization of George Mason.

“�鶹�� main goal is to provide safe spaces for healing and asking questions,” he said.

For example, the Pride Alliance organized an event where former Harvard swimmer Schuyler Bailar, the first transgender athlete to compete in on a NCAA Division I men’s team, came to speak at George Mason’s Fairfax Campus.

“He’s from the [D.C.] area, and he swam at George Mason’s pool as a kid. He shared his story about being a trans athlete. That was something that was really meaningful for a lot of people at George Mason,” said Kornfeld.

Collaborative efforts across different offices, affinity groups, and departments show George Mason’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and to promoting inclusivity and diversity.

Other resources for the health and safety of the LGBTQ+ community at George Mason include the LGBTQ+ Peer Mentoring Program, LGBTQ+ residential Learning Community, and the Safe Zone+ Workshop Series among others.

“What we want is for families and students to be able to choose George Mason as a place where they feel that they can be academically successful while also being who they are without fear of violence or discrimination, and thrive in their identity,” said Kinchen.

George Mason’s nursing doctorate program is 1st among public universities in U.S. News and World Report graduate program rankings; the law school is top three in the Washington, Maryland and Virginia region

George Mason �鶹��’s nursing programs climbed to the top in graduate program rankings from U.S. News and World Report, ready to meet the commonwealth’s increased workforce demands for highly skilled career-ready health care talent.

Mason’s doctor of nursing practice program ranked No. 1 among public institutions—up 27 spots from last year—and No. 2 among institutions nationally—up 37 spots. The nursing master’s program came in at No. 4 (up 17 spots) for public universities and No. 10 (up 28) nationally.

The master of public health program also jumped ahead 23 spots to become No. 53 nationally among all institutions, and 35th among publics. The social work program is 47th among public institutions, and the heath systems management program is 17th among public institutions and 32nd nationally. Mason is home to Virginia’s first College of Public Health.

"At Mason, our focus is clear: to foster excellence and innovation in public health education, research, and practice,” said College of Public Health Dean Melissa Perry. “As the pioneering College of Public Health in Virginia, we are setting the standard for interprofessional education in this vital field. �鶹�� programs are designed to equip the next generation of health professionals with the knowledge and skills to address the complex health challenges of our time."

Overall this year, Mason has 21 graduate programs in the top 50 among public universities and 14 programs in the top 50 of all universities nationally. (All U.S. News graduate program rankings, including previous years, are available here.)

Antonin Scalia Law School’s law program advanced to No. 11 among public schools and No. 28 among all law schools nationally. With this move, it ranks third among all law schools in Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland. The part-time program ranks second nationally among all public law schools.

“The law school achieved the highest ranking in the school’s history at No. 28,” said Scalia Law Dean Ken Randall. “The part-time JD program remains among the top five nationally. Despite its relative youth, Scalia is ranked No. 3 among the 16 law schools in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland, behind only UVA and Georgetown.”

The College of Education and Human Development’s special education program gained ground as well, coming in at No. 16 for publics (up one) and No. 17 for all institutions (up two).

“We are so proud of our special education program,” said Dean Ingrid Guerra-López. “This recognition affirms our commitment to excellence, innovation, and the belief that every individual has the potential to make a meaningful impact in the world. It is a testament to our faculty, staff, and students, who work tirelessly to push boundaries and inspire change.”

The Schar School of Policy and Government is 4th in homeland security both nationally and among publics. The school ranks 39th nationally overall and 26th among publics for public affairs; 10th among publics for nonprofit management (13th nationally); 33 nationally and 24 among publics for public management and leadership; and No. 31 nationally and No. 17 among publics for public policy analysis.

“These rankings are affirmation of the strong quality of the Schar School’s academic programs and cutting-edge research,” said Schar School Dean Mark Rozell. “The continued growth in the rankings aligns to the value proposition that Schar provides to students and career-seekers located in the Washington, D.C., region, offering direct access to leaders, news makers, policy advocates, and amazing faculty expertise.”

“Mason has made significant investments in graduate education and the latest U.S. News rankings reflect our commitment to excellence as well as reaffirm the quality and hard work of our faculty, students, and staff,” Interim Provost Ken Walsh said. “I’m proud that our teaching and learning is recognized, as well as the impact of research and scholarship these programs produce.”

In 2022, Mason launched its Graduate Division, expanding student support services and creating a dedicated graduate success center, to increase graduate funding for programs. New professional development programs, such as the Accelerate to Industry program, the Graduate Student Career Conference, the Communication Academy four-part performance workshop series, and a Skillcraft Series for graduate teaching through the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, offer students a roadmap combining their academic learning with work-readiness skills.

U.S. News announced April 8 that they would delay the release of Engineering School rankings and rankings for Clinical Psychology programs, as well as Medical School rankings.

George Mason �鶹�� continues to advance as a top 50 university in the national rankings. U.S. News & World Report rankings of online master’s degree programs, announced today, include nine Mason programs in the top 50 among public universities and eight in the top 50 among all institutions. Nursing, education, business, and offerings for veterans were among the top-ranked programs.

“These rankings are a testament to the strength of our degree programs, the talent of our faculty, the excellence of our student body and their aptitude for rigorous coursework,” College of Education and Human Development Dean Ingrid Guerra-López said. “�鶹�� year-over-year rise confirms and reinforces our ongoing commitment to innovate and grow to meet the needs of today’s workforce.”

As a university that prides itself on access and affordability, Mason’s strong showing in online rankings resonates with students, professionals looking to enhance their careers, and others looking for flexible class offerings. The online program rankings come on the heels of several top 50 rankings for Mason last fall as well. You can check out all of Mason rankings on our rankings page.

The nursing program climbed to 34th in U.S. News, best in the Virginia-Maryland-Washington, D.C., region, up 12 spots from last year, and the program’s overall national ranking rose 15 spots to 49th. In the nursing program geared toward veterans, Mason is 11th among public universities and 18th overall nationally.

“George Mason �鶹��’s interprofessional approach to nursing and our innovative teaching practices, including virtual reality applications, prepare students for tomorrow’s health care challenges today,” College of Public Health Dean Melissa J. Perry said. “Mason nurses build knowledge and gain cultural competencies, distinguishing them as some of the most well-rounded nurses in the country.”

Amid a national shortage of special education teachers, Mason ranks eighth nationally in special education, and eighth among public universities, up three spots in both from last year. Education for veterans is 14th among publics and overall, up three and four slots from last year, respectively. In addition, education is 40th among publics and 45th overall, topping by eight and seven spots the rankings from last year. Curriculum and instruction is 17th among publics and overall.

Mason’s education program is why Northern Virginia is home to some of the nation’s top public school systems. An estimated half of Northern Virginia K-12 school administrators, and by some estimates one-third of teachers, have Mason degrees or certifications.

“We are so proud to support the region with skilled and well-prepared professionals,” Guerra-López said. “We work collaboratively with school divisions, community organizations, government, business, and other partners to help build an educated and thriving community.”

The Costello College of Business earned three high rankings, including 41st among publics, and 50th overall, in online MBA for veterans. About 1 in 10 students at Mason identifies as active duty, veteran, or dependent.

“Mason is a place of possibility for active-duty service members and veterans to acquire new skills and qualifications, and to ease the transition to civilian life and advance their careers,” Costello College of Business Dean Ajay Vinzé said. “This is an important role Mason plays for the military community as they continue to contribute and lead in society.”

Non-MBA business is 44th among publics and up four spots to 62 nationally. MBA is 54th among publics and 74th overall.

Among the other highlights from the rankings are information technology at 35th among publics and 50th overall, both slightly up from last year. Engineering came in at 51st among publics and 67th overall.
