Three members of George Mason �鶹�� men's wrestling team will be competing at the NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championship, held March 20-22 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

The Patriots DJ McGee, Kaden Cassidy, and Malachi DuVall earned bids to compete. McGee and DuVall are returning to the championship, having competed last year as well. McGee heads to the tournament as the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Champion, while DuVall and Cassidy earned third place finishes.

McGee is slotted as the No. 17 seed, while DuVall is 21, and first-time NCAA qualifier Cassidy goes into the tournament in the No. 27 slot. The junior battled his way through wrestle-backs with four straight wins to finish third in the conference.

The three qualifiers were a major reason George Mason finished the season with a 12-6 record, its best finish in the MAC (6-2). This is the team’s third consecutive season with double-digit wins. After back-to-back 11-win seasons, the Patriots won 12 this season. It is the most wins in a season since the 2007-08 season when they finished with a 13-5 record.

George Mason �鶹�� has been crowned the Atlantic 10 Women's Indoor Track and Field Champions, claiming the title over VCU at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The men's team placed second in the championship behind Rhode Island.

The Patriots clinched the championship in dramatic fashion, securing three additional medals on the final day of competition. Senior Abby Weening captured gold in the high jump, delivering a pivotal performance that helped George Mason maintain its lead over VCU. She was also named the Most Outstanding Field Performer, recognizing her stellar meet, which included two gold medals in the pentathlon and high jump. Junior Olamide Enajekpo earned bronze in the shot put, while sophomore Susan Adenitan placed third in the 200m race.

With the championship hanging in the balance, the 4x400m relay became the deciding event. Holding a slim 2.5-point advantage over VCU, the Patriots needed to outpace the Rams to secure the title. The relay team—Chairely Bido, Simone Hamlar, Helena Santacana, and Ay'rianna Moore—delivered in dominant fashion, sealing the long-awaited victory for George Mason.

"Overall, an outstanding weekend of competition for both genders but, especially for our women. It was just a tremendous effort spread across all event groups," said Head Coach Andrew Gerard. “It really is not an exaggeration to say that we continue to have the best combined men's and women's program in the conference and that is 100% credit to the team of athletes we have assembled and the awesome staff that helps get them onto the line, circle and runway."

This victory marks a historic achievement for George Mason, as the Patriots have claimed their first A-10 Indoor Championship since 2014.

The men's team placed second, only behind Rhode Island who have won the Atlantic 10 Championship for the fifth consecutive year.

The men’s 60m hurdles were swept by the Patriots. Freshman Davian Burke won bronze, junior Albert Asare placed silver, and graduate student Joshua Sutton won the gold. Senior Paul McClain earned the gold in the 500m race, and a gold was also won in the 4x400m relays with a young team of Mason Samuels, Lance Koontz, Max Karen, and Jordan Tuck. Sophomore Abdurrazzaq Hassan got the bronze in the heptathlon.

The intersection of art and technology has long been a space for innovation, creativity, and exploration. At George Mason �鶹��’s Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center (MARC) located within the College of Engineering and Computing, this connection has taken center stage with the Integrating Art and Tech Project. This project brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds to create tech-enhanced artwork that highlights MARC’s cutting-edge research in autonomy, embedded artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics.

The inaugural class began in the fall 2024 semester and met weekly, with artists voluntarily returning on weekends, drawn by the project’s engaging and hands-on nature. Applied computer science major Alexia De Costa, the project’s lead, guided the team of eight students—Irene Hossain, Clarisse Ladaban, Ariel Clemmons, Srikriti Bulusu, Saanvi Munigela, Oluwatomisin Badmus, Adam Alsuezi, and Wanyi Chen (visiting scholar)—who dedicated their time to designing and assembling a collection of interactive artworks.

"Technology has the potential not only to advance autonomous systems, but also to serve as an interactive medium for storytelling and creativity,” said De Costa, who is also an member of the Honors College. "The combination of artistic expression and technological advancement makes the research at MARC more accessible to the public, sparking broader conversations about how these advancements can shape our future."

Their semester-long efforts culminated in an exhibition in December showcasing the innovative projects created through this collaboration.

Exploring the Collection

The collection is divided into three thematic groups: blimps, computer vision, and ground robots, each representing a significant research area at MARC.

Blimps: Bioinspiration in Motion

Lighter-than-air autonomous vehicles are inspired by marine life, including manta rays, stingrays, jellyfish, and sharks. This influence is captured through a lenticular design, where each blimp morphs into its corresponding sea creature as viewers move past the piece. The interactive visual experience reflects MARC’s aerial robotics research and highlights the way bioinspired designs influence technological advancements.

Computer Vision: The Watchful Eye

A moving eye follows the viewer, its pixelated iris symbolizing the computational process behind image recognition and illustrating how AI-powered computer vision perceives the world. Surrounding the eye, a realistic depiction of the sky contrasts with bounding boxes that outline detected clouds—one of which is left undetected to highlight the imperfections and limitations of computer vision technology.

The work draws inspiration from René Magritte’s The False Mirror (1928), creating a thought-provoking commentary on perception and machine learning.

Ground Robots: Interactive Autonomy

Evolved from its original concept of free-moving robots responding to human touch, the final design features a hidden George Mason logo embedded in a maze that illuminates when a viewer is detected. The background features native plant species from the university’s campus, grounding the piece in its natural environment while highlighting the fusion of technology and organic elements.

Supported by the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR) through the Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP), this project benefited from oversight and guidance of MARC codirectors Missy Cummings and Jesse Kirkpatrick to ensure alignment with the center’s research goals.

“This project highlights just how much creative talent exists in George Mason’s College of Engineering and Computing, and also just what student initiative and leadership can accomplish,” said Cummings. “Because of Alexia’s vision, there is now an undergraduate art and technology class that is available to all students.”

Beyond showcasing student ingenuity and dedication, this collaboration between artists and engineers resulted in meaningful outcomes. Additionally, a partnership with World3D allowed the team to produce high-quality prints at a fraction of the typical cost. Pieces that would have cost upwards of $2,500 were fabricated for significantly less, making innovation more accessible.

Exploring New Frontiers in Research

The Integrating Art and Tech Project marks a pivotal step in demonstrating how art can serve as a medium for interpreting and understanding technological advancements. As MARC continues to explore new frontiers in autonomy and AI, initiatives like this will play an essential role in making complex research more tangible and engaging to broader audiences.

“Exemplifying the power of interdisciplinary collaboration, this project demonstrates how engineering and computing merge with artistic expression to create something truly innovative,” said Kirkpatrick. “At MARC, we recognize that autonomy and robotics research aren’t just about advancing technology—they’re about making it impactful, engaging, and meaningful.”

The inaugural class of students has set a remarkable precedent for future cohorts, demonstrating that technology is not only about efficiency and automation—it also has the power to drive innovation in unexpected ways, engage the human experience, and create immersive moments that resonate and inspire.

During the fall 2024 semester, George Mason �鶹�� students had the opportunity to apply their classroom curriculum to a real-world museum environment. The students, led by art history professor Robert DeCaroli, worked directly with objects in the holdings of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Asian Art as part of the ARTH 495/595 Curating an Exhibit course.

Through a partnership with the National Museum of Asian Art and the generosity of Debra Diamond, the curator for South and Southeast Asian art, DeCaroli’s students studied painted miniatures and manuscript pages dated 1500-1800 from India’s Rajput and Pahari Courts. Students curated their own online exhibit and designed all of the museum-related materials necessary for their display, including labels, wall texts, catalog entries, educational programming, gallery talks and more.

Senior Charmaine Mapp explained that museum curation begins with the intention of education. “You need to know what this culture is and what story you're trying to tell,” Mapp said.

From there, the students proposed what they wanted to do based on the 14 paintings they had selected.

“We considered the stories presented in these paintings,” said Mapp, who is a business major. “What did we want to say with our exhibition? What did we want our theme to be, and how would everything connect?”  

DeCaroli’s class ultimately settled on the theme of “Loving Krishna: Four Centuries of Indian Painting,” a title which has a double meaning, referring to the Hindu deity as both a loving god and the object of his followers’ love. The exhibit is currently on view at Fenwick Library until February 15.

For DeCaroli, the course is just as rewarding for him as it is for his students. “It has been a joy watching the students feel connected to their paintings,” he said. “That enthusiasm provides motivation for excellent research into the history and meaning of the artwork.”

With George Mason’s proximity to Washington, D.C., dedicated faculty members and generous community partners, there is so much for students to explore both within and outside of the classroom.

Mapp has been interested in curation for as long as she can remember. “When you walk into a museum or a gallery, you just see the end result. But you often don’t realize that that's created from nothing. So, this was a really good experience, especially being able to go into the archives, work with the actual paintings, and meet people who worked at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art,” she said.

“If you’re interested in art, history, or any other field, look at the classes available,” said Mapp. “I didn't know that Curating an Exhibition was a class until I looked in the course catalog. Courses like this really allow you to get more hands-on experience, develop relationships with professors, and make connections that lead to special opportunities.” 

“I have been impressed with the class's professionalism and collaborative spirit,” said DeCaroli. “Exhibitions are group efforts and good communication skills are vital to a successful project. This class has been exemplary in that regard.”

George Mason �鶹�� has received Virginia Board of Education funding for two of 14 lab schools being established around the commonwealth.

In partnership with local employers and community organizations, Virginia lab schools are focused on expanding opportunities for students by exposing them to workplaces that highlight the important role academic success plays in life. The lab schools provide another chance for George Mason to meet students where they are to offer them a distinctive educational path to achieve their goals, while also addressing career readiness objectives in the commonwealth.

George Mason is working with Northern Virginia Community College and Loudoun County Public Schools on the Accelerated College and Employability Skills (ACCESS) Academy, which will provide students with an alternative education pathway that emphasizes employability skills, innovative teaching and learning methods, and immersive experiences developed with industry partners, researchers, and instructional faculty.

Students in grades 9 and 10 will focus on completing high school graduation requirements while being introduced to problem-based learning. Students in grades 11 and 12 can then earn up to 30 college credits that may be applied toward a two- or four-year degree program upon graduation.

Researchers and industry partners will also work with ACCESS students as part of a new Learning Innovation Lab, where teaching and learning innovations will be applied, evaluated, adapted, and disseminated.

Roberto Pamas of George Mason’s School of Education has been selected to serve as director of ACCESS Academy. In this role, he has been working with lab school partners to develop curriculum and course offerings and assessing staffing requirements and other resource needs. ACCESS Academy is expected to launch in fall 2025.

The Shenandoah Valley Rural Regional College Partnership Laboratory School for Data Science, Computing, and Applications (DSCA) is a collaboration between the university and Laurel Ridge Community College, Frederick County Public Schools, and Mountain Vista Governor’s School, as well as six rural and rural-fringe school districts in the Shenandoah Valley.

Programming will support 10th through 12th graders and cover data science and computing, research opportunities, apprenticeships and internships, experiential and project-based learning, certifications and microcredentials in data analytics, opportunities to earn an associate’s degree and college credits, as well as work-based learning opportunities. Students begin preparing for the lab school during their sophomore year, with programming starting in their junior and senior years.

“The vision is to create a data literate workforce empowered with skills, knowledge, and the mindset necessary to solve problems in a data-driven world,” says George Mason mathematical sciences professor Padhu Seshaiyer, who leads the effort.

The DSCA lab school will officially begin in fall 2025, with online offerings starting during the 2024–25 academic year. The school’s physical location will be in Frederick County. In addition to the students’ regular coursework in their respective districts, lab school courses will take place online through George Mason, Laurel Ridge Community College, and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation.

Stanley and Rosemary Hayes Jones continue their legacy of philanthropy at George Mason �鶹�� with a transformative $1 million gift to establish the Stanley and Rosemary Hayes Jones Networking Testbed Lab within the Fuse at Mason Square building.

The Stanley and Rosemary Hayes Jones Networking Testbed Lab will be dedicated to network applications including secure communications, advanced antennae systems, next-G and O-RAN innovations, with applications in air transportation, high-speed and autonomous vehicles, smart power grids, intelligent buildings, manufacturing, technology and national defense. Expected to open by June 2025, the lab will support both faculty and student research efforts.

"George Mason �鶹�� is deeply grateful for the Jones family's generous investment in our students and faculty and in empowering innovators from across our region," George Mason President Gregory Washington said. "Their support of the testbed lab reflects a commitment to advancing critical research in rapidly developing technologies and fostering a diverse, well-prepared workforce that will serve Northern Virginia employers for decades to come."

The investment qualifies as part of George Mason’s contribution to the commonwealth’s Tech Talent Investment Program (TTIP), a statewide initiative aimed at increasing degrees in computer science, computer engineering, and software engineering in the College of Engineering and Computing by 2039. The gift also activates a match from the commonwealth through TTIP, increasing the impact to bolster Northern Virginia’s tech talent pipeline. Through TTIP, higher education institutions, private donors, and corporate partners will collectively contribute more than $2 billion to expand Virginia’s tech workforce, starting from early education and extending through college, internships, and employment.

Stanley Jones, a former a surveillance and communications engineer and first-generation college graduate, is dedicated to providing opportunities for future generations.

“Throughout my career in engineering, I saw the power of access to advanced research and technology. I’m excited about the possibilities this new testbed lab will bring, providing George Mason students with hands-on experiences in a cutting-edge field,” he said. Rosemary Hayes Jones, who served the Northern Virginia community as a real estate agent for more than 35 years, shares this commitment to advancing education and community impact. “We believe that investing in education and innovation is essential to fostering a thriving community and a strong workforce.”

This gift follows a $400,000 commitment to the Early Identification Program (EIP) given to George Mason in 2023. The EIP funding supports two program initiatives: the EIP STEM Fusion Expansion, a K-12 program to increase the number of first-generation students pursuing STEM fields, and the Stanley and Rosemary Jones STEM Scholars Program, which provides direct support to EIP students pursuing STEM majors.

“Stanley Jones exemplifies the potential of first-generation students. When given opportunities, these students excel,” said Rose Pascarell, vice president of �鶹�� Life for George Mason. “This investment in EIP will expand access to STEM fields, and the impact will extend beyond George Mason �鶹�� to benefit the Northern Virginia community."

Established in 1987, EIP provides critical resources to first-generation middle and high school students in partnership with seven Virginia school districts. The program serves more than 900 students annually, providing them and their families with the resources and guidance needed to navigate postsecondary education.

The Joneses’ gift to EIP accelerates George Mason’s efforts to close the achievement gap for first-generation college students in STEM and supports the STEM Fusion program, which offers students supplemental STEM coursework and expands the program’s reach to serve more students in neighboring counties.

Additionally, the Stanley and Rosemary Jones STEM Scholars initiative will support a cohort of 10 EIP graduates attending George Mason as STEM majors. With professional mentoring, cultural and career programming, and internship opportunities—including placements at MITRE, Jones's former employer—the program is designed to strengthen retention and career readiness for these students.

“As a first-generation student, I worked my way through undergraduate school and then received a fellowship to attend graduate school. The fellowship made all the difference—it allowed me to pursue a successful career as an engineer,” said Stanley Jones. “Through our support for the George Mason �鶹�� Early Identification Program and the internship and mentorship support from MITRE, we are hoping to give a similar opportunity to other deserving students.”

Each year, the George Mason �鶹�� Alumni Association’s annual Celebration of Distinction recognizes outstanding alumni, faculty members, and students.

Hollis Kosco, BA Speech Communication ’94, is Alumna of the Year. She is the senior transportation manager for FIFA World Cup 2026 in Miami, Florida, where she oversees operational planning in three countries at 16 stadiums with 48 participating teams. Kosco was a member of both George Mason’s 1993 NCAA tournament runner-up women’s soccer team and the U.S. national handball team. Her international career in sports management and communications has included seven Olympic games, two Asian Games, the 2015 Pan American Games, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Kimiko Lighty, MAIS ’10, received the Alumni Service Award. She is the founding executive director of Restorative Arlington (RA). An innovator in peace building and conflict resolution techniques, Lighty has been involved with RA since the initiative began in 2020. She led the design and implementation of RA’s Heart of Safety Restorative Justice Conferencing Program, a diversion program serving Arlington’s public schools, legal system, and community, and continues to serve as a strategic advisor to the organization. In partnership with the non profit Doorways, RA has been awarded a five-year $1.5 million grant award from the federal Office on Violence Against Women to address harms resulting from intimate partner violence, dating and domestic violence, stalking, and sexual assault.

Kala J. West, BA Communication ’15, received the Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award. She is an entrepreneur, media production consultant, and host of Sunday Morning Praise and Morning Inspiration on WURD Radio (96.1 FM/900 AM). She is also a media professional for the Penn Sports Network. West has been recognized by George Mason’s Black Alumni Chapter among its 2023 40 Under 40 Distinguished Alumni, as a 2023 20 Under 40 COGIC Achievers Award honoree, and among Funtimes magazine’s 30 Under 30 People to Watch in 2017.

Gabriele Belle, an instructional associate professor in George Mason’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, is Faculty Member of the Year. She supervises all astronomy and college physics lab courses and teaches physics in the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program. Belle is also a member of the university’s Nano-IMAGINE Council, which supports the growth of Virginia’s nanotech sector. Her research has included investigating quantum well structures with laser spectroscopy in high magnetic fields, developing new semiconductor devices, and building satellites to explore the GPS signal above the GPS satellites orbiting the Earth, for which she received the Air Force Association’s Citation of Honor and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Special Recognition Award.

Celine Apenteng, BA Conflict Analysis and Resolution ’24, is Senior of the Year. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in international security and expects to graduate in May 2025. As an undergraduate, she served as vice president in Student Government, speaker of the Student Senate, a member of the President’s Student Advisory Board, and co-chair of the Student Advisory Council for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Over the past year, Apenteng interned at the White House in the Office of Public Engagement and for the U.S. Department of State. She also works with the Carter School’s John Mitchell Jr. Program for History, Justice, and Race to promote a more informed dialogue on the intersections between historical memory, justice, and racial reconciliation.

Job: Education Coordinator, Hylton Performing Arts Center

The Hylton Performing Arts Center opened its doors at George Mason �鶹�� in 2010, and Marit Majeske, education coordinator, has been along for the ride ever since.

Located on George Mason’s Science and Technology Campus in Manassas, Virginia, the Hylton Center is managed by the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The center was created in partnership with Prince William County, the City of Manassas, and the Commonwealth of Virginia, with help from private donors and local business members. Today, it boasts 102,000 square feet of space to serve the community through performances and arts programming.

Hometown arts: After graduating from college, Majeske worked on political campaigns. But in 2010, she was ready for a change, and something was calling her to the arts, which had long been her passion. When Majeske heard that George Mason was opening a performing arts center in Prince William County—where she grew up—she decided to apply for a job.

Getting the house in order: Majeske started out as the front of house manager, where she built the volunteer usher and accessibility programs and created procedures to ensure a smooth visitor experience. In 2016, she took the additional role of interim education coordinator, which later became a full-time position. While working at the Hylton Center, Majeske earned her master’s in arts management from George Mason.

A broad palette: Today, Majeske leads the Hylton Center’s Education Initiative, which offers learners of all ages free opportunities to experience and engage in the arts. “Through in-person and virtual programming such as field trips, backstage tours, lecture-demonstrations, and masterclasses led by professional artists, every community member can experience the arts in meaningful ways,” Majeske said.

Arts class: Working with local school districts is one of Majeske’s favorite parts of the job. The Hylton Center hosts students from public schools in Prince William County, the City of Manassas, and the City of Manassas Park, as well as others, for arts programming.

“These schools have impressive arts programs, and I enjoy getting the opportunity to provide additional experiences to students and teachers that support their work in the classroom,” Majeske said.

Peak performance: In the 2023–24 season, nearly 20,000 learners of all ages participated in Hylton Center Education Initiative programming. Majeske says that meeting the growing needs of the community is one of the most fulfilling, but also the most challenging, parts of her jobs.

“We have seen significant growth in our Education Initiative engagement since 2020, and we hope to continue to expand in a way that provides a wide range of arts experiences reaching learners of all ages—from preschool through lifelong learners,” Majeske said.

Introducing the cast: Majeske’s work intersects with the Mason Artist-in-Residence program, in which artists participate in creative activities with the community prior to their public Hylton Center performances.

“One of my favorite things is getting to know the artists’ interests beyond their art form, which lends itself to creating unique opportunities for engagement with our community members,” Majeske said.

Behind the curtain: Building opportunities for connection between artists and their audiences drives Majeske’s work. And sometimes, it goes off-script. A lifelong fan of Broadway, one of her fondest George Mason memories was when Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell performed at the Hylton Center.

“That evening, while I was addressing our ushers backstage prior to the performance, Mr. Stokes Mitchell stumbled upon our meeting and had been quietly listening in the background,” Majeske said. “Unprompted, he stepped forward, introduced himself, and thanked everyone for welcoming him. What a lovely surprise for our ushers!”

All the world’s a stage—and a classroom: Through her work at Hylton and her own educational experiences, Majeske knows that valuable learning happens outside the confines of a classroom. When she’s not working or taking in performances, she loves to explore, frequently taking in historic sites, museums, and independent bookstores. “I am a firm believer in lifelong learning,” she said.

In July Charles “Cully” Stimson, JD ‘92, was elected as rector of the George Mason �鶹�� Board of Visitors. A businessman and attorney, Stimson is the deputy director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, Senior Legal Fellow, manager of the National Security Law Program, and senior advisor to the president at The Heritage Foundation.

A third-generation naval officer, Stimson formerly served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs. He advised then-Secretaries of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates and coordinated the Pentagon’s global detention policy and operations, including at Guantanamo Bay and in Iraq and Afghanistan. The George caught up with Stimson to talk about his background, plans as rector, and his love of soccer.

Rector is a volunteer position and a time-consuming one. What drew you to this type of public service? What do you hope to accomplish as rector during your two-year term?

I've served my country in uniform for 30 years. I've volunteered for a variety of charities over the years. I like giving back. When my name was put forward, I was honored to serve the commonwealth.

I'm in learning mode right now. Since I've been asked to lead the team, I've probably made a hundred phone calls to every single board member combined. I'm meeting with every single dean of every single college before my first full board meeting. I pledged to the student representatives, who are nonvoting members of the board, that I'll be taking them out for pizza every quarter so they can bring their friends and tell me what's going on. We need to be more involved and informed so we can perform our governance.

As board members, we are fundraisers and cheerleaders and recruiters for the school. You can't be an advocate for a place if you don't know about the place. You either lean in and learn your craft and help make the place a better place for everybody in the community, or you sit back and you're a potted plant. I've never been a potted plant.

You earned a law degree from George Mason’s Antonin Scalia Law School and taught there as an adjunct for five years. How has your George Mason law degree served you in your career?

The law school professors I've kept in touch with have helped me think through legal issues, ethical issues, career issues. I thought that those teachers were ahead of their time at the school. They were national treasures, and they've been my friends my whole professional life. And I'm just starting to find out more about those types of gems on the faculty at the undergraduate level and other places at Mason.

What do you most hope to see the university achieve in your time leading the board?

We're a collegial board, and we're going to remain that way. I'm going to give everyone the opportunity and invite everybody to speak at every board meeting, just like I did when I was a judge. I wanted all the advocates to put their thoughts on the record.

We have a fiduciary duty to act on behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia. But more specifically, we have to act in the best interest of George Mason �鶹��.

George Mason has continued to grow each year for more than a decade. What makes George Mason so attractive to so many different types of students?

An education is a credential that should prepare you for the job market. �鶹�� students have the benefit of being in a job market mecca. We're affordable. We shed the commuter school mantra a while ago. And we're moving in the direction of a much more vibrant residential campus. You hear the Northern Virginia Technology Council and other people who represent the private sector and the public partnerships say that Mason is producing the type of graduates they need and they want.

So you have the benefit of the location, and the burden of the location with its cost of living. I hope Richmond knows that. We deserve to attract and retain and pay faculty at a competitive rate. Otherwise, we're going to lose them. You see how many colleges and universities have footprints in Washington, D.C.? We're not just competing against Virginia and Virginia Tech and the rest, we're competing against the globe.

The governor recently released new performance expectations for Virginia’s public universities, including goals that focus on affordability and career development for students, many of which George Mason is already leading on. With that said, what else should George Mason do to meet these new performance expectations?

I think we're doing exactly what the governor is challenging us to do. The quest for human capital is a competitive, ever-changing dynamic. We are fulfilling that demand signal. We're big, but we're not so big that we can't move with dispatch to fulfill that growing demand.

Look at what we're doing with [artificial intelligence (AI)], how we're leaning into it and understanding that we have to not only adopt and embrace AI but also figure out the rules and parameters of how we're going to responsibly use that, not only at the research level, but at the teaching level and student level.

What skill would you like to see all George Mason students graduate with to succeed in the ever-changing work landscape of the future?

Understanding how the government works, from its founding, and having a thorough undergraduate level understanding of what a republic is, what the key moving parts of the Constitution are, what the Federalist Papers say. George Mason's role in writing the Virginia Declaration of Rights. Understanding the separation of powers and how it is defined here is unique from anywhere else in the world. And why that's a strength. Understanding the difference between vertical separation of powers and horizontal separation of powers, and how that is the definition of a federalist government. It matters more now than ever. It's irrelevant whether you're Republican or Democrat or independent.

That's on the one end of the spectrum. The other end is, I don't care what your major is, I think you have to have in your toolkit some facility with computer programming. You can equip these young men and women with tools that a lot of other colleges are not equipping their students with.

Soccer is a passion of yours. You captained the team at Kenyon College, and you’re Chairman Emeritus of the U.S. Soccer Foundation, the charitable arm of U.S. Soccer. What is it about soccer that appeals to you, and what lessons and values do you find are transferable to your leadership role at George Mason?

Soccer is the world's best sport, in my opinion. It doesn't matter how big you are, doesn't matter where you're from, doesn't matter how much money you have. It matters how big your heart is and how hard you're willing to work. It has a low to almost no barrier to entry. It's the perfect metaphor for life. How you play on the pitch depends on how much work you put in way ahead of time. How much time you spend alone with your craft, juggling, dribbling, passing against the wall. It requires syncopation and communication and collaboration.

The U.S. Soccer Foundation serves about 120,000 kids in 25 or 30 cities, all of whom are minorities, in underserved neighborhoods, for our Soccer for Success program. We're using soccer to help these kids make healthy choices, become better citizens. Next to being a husband and a father, it's the most meaningful thing I do.

The university’s Mason Now: Power the Possible fundraising campaign is in full swing, and in one of your first acts as rector, you encouraged your fellow board members to support the university financially. Tell us why this commitment is so important to you.

Because it's called public service and you have to serve the public. We have a great board. We have 16 terrific people. We're all super busy, but we said yes when asked to serve. And yes means capital Y, capital E, capital S. And that means you lean in for the short period of time you're on the board, and you give to your ability and get as much as you can for the school. People on this board have massive Rolodexes. The comprehensive campaign--we have to succeed. It's not an if, it's how big do we surpass it by? You said yes because you believe in the school. And so the best proof of that is to raise money for the school. And that should be an easy sell.

George Mason �鶹�� is Virginia’s leading university for value and upward mobility, and ranked in the top 25 nationally for innovation according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges 2025 released today. George Mason also achieved a new distinction from U.S. News, as a top 20 school nationally and No. 1 in Virginia for internships, reflecting its commitment to developing the talent needed for today’s dynamic workforce demands.

Additionally, the university ranks as a top 50 public university nationally in the Wall Street Journal’s Best Colleges in the U.S..

“As Virginia’s largest and most diverse public university, George Mason is a leader in advancing Virginia as a top state in business and education,” said George Mason President Gregory Washington. “George Mason serves families by providing flexibility and affordability of educational excellence and serves the commonwealth by driving innovation for economic development. Student success and college affordability

George Mason is ranked No. 1 in Virginia for upward mobility across all rankings that measure social mobility, and is No. 1 among public universities nationwide according to U.S. News, 30th with Washington Monthly �鶹�� Rankings, and 58th with the Wall Street Journal.

George Mason is also ranked as the No. 1 best value school in Virginia by the Wall Street Journal (55th among public universities nationally) and 13th by Washington Monthly among public universities in the Southeast. Best value rankings highlight universities that offer a strong education at an affordable cost with low debt, factoring in financial aid and post-graduation success.

This year, George Mason debuted 20th in the U.S. News ranking for internships/co-ops, reflecting its strong business and government partnerships to prepare students for successful careers and enhance their college experience. These rankings showcase universities that enable students to apply classroom learning in professional environments, boosting their skills and career prospects.

“These strong rankings on student internships and co-ops underscore our commitment to be recognized as a top research university that also prioritizes students’ experiential learning," said Provost and Executive Vice President Jim Antony. “George Mason students consistently share that our faculty, who are leaders in their fields, offer substantive experiential learning opportunities, all of which translates into long-term positive outcomes and career success.”

In addition to internships, George Mason provides students with career resources, such as multiple career fairs, professional development opportunities, career preparation courses, and job placement support. With graduation rates above the national average, 88% of 2023 George Mason graduates report job success related to their career goals, earning a median salary of $74,000, and 83% remain in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. Here is a list of companies that have hired George Mason graduates.

This fall, the university enrolled its largest and most academically talented freshmen class to date. About one in four students at George Mason is a first-generation college student, and a slightly higher percentage qualify for Federal Pell Grants. In the past decade, George Mason has granted over 90,000 degrees, more than any other public four-year university in the commonwealth.

Overall rankings

U.S. News ranks George Mason tied for 52nd among public universities nationwide. The Wall Street Journal puts George Mason as a top 50 public university, ranking it 30th (up from 33rd) and Washington Monthly ranks the university 57th among public universities (up from 60th).

Among all universities, both public and private, George Mason earns a tied ranking 109th from U.S. News, 76th with the Wall Street Journal (up from 95th), and 91st with Washington Monthly.

U.S. News also ranked several of George Mason’s undergraduate programs in the top 100 nationally, including business, economics, computer science, engineering, and psychology, and named George Mason as one of the best colleges for veterans.

Commitment to free speech

These high-profile rankings follow other recent accolades that highlight George Mason as one of America’s most inclusive and welcoming universities. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) ranked George Mason 16th for its commitment to freedom of speech. George Mason’s Patriot Plan for Community Safety and Well-Being includes guidelines for campus safety for maintaining the rights, privacy, and dignity of all in our community. Campus Pride also gave George Mason a 5-Star rating, the only public university in Virginia, for offering a safe and welcoming campus to the LGBTQ+ community.
