Professor Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera is at center.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span>Following the coattails of President Biden鈥檚 highly publicized visit to Brownsville, Texas, a cadre of graduate students from George Mason 麻豆国产鈥檚 </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/"><span>Schar School of Policy and Government</span></a><span> arrived for a week of academic activity along the U.S.-Mexico border and in Mexico City. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/news/2024-04/exploring-border-narratives-another-successful-trip-international-relations-policy">Unlike a parallel trip to the same region at the same time by the Schar School鈥檚 International Relations Policy Task Force (you can read their story at this page)</a>, 鈥渙ur trip was about the U.S.-Mexico relations during a time of elections,鈥 said Professor </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/profiles/gcorreac"><span>Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera</span></a><span>, a foremost expert on border and immigration policy who accompanied the students.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淏order developments are perhaps the most consequential policy issue of this time,鈥 said </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/profiles/mmcelwai"><span>Michal McElwain Malur</span></a><span>, director of external programs at the Schar School, who assembled the itinerary and helped lead the trip to the border for a second year in a row. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淪ince the inception of its study abroad program, the Schar School has prioritized providing students with opportunities to explore consequential policy problems facing the U.S. today.鈥 </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e spent one whole day at the border, specifically at the border wall, and we spoke at length with a local editor about border security,鈥 added Correa-Cabrera. 鈥淚t was important to see this issue through the eyes of someone who covers it for newspapers for a population that relies on accurate information.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Along the way they met with top industry and government leaders on both sides of the border, with whom they freely discussed the ongoing issues that keep the U.S.鈥揗exico affiliation at the top of international headlines. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淧utting a face to the border was fascinating,鈥 said Davis Kaderli, a </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/masters-programs/public-policy-mpp"><span>Master of Public Policy student</span></a><span> and participant on the trip. 鈥<span>What I actually saw isn鈥檛 what the mass media often portrays. It is much more complex than the majority of Americans understand.鈥 </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>For instance, while in Brownsville, Texas, the students heard harrowing stories of inadequate services provided to Americans in need along the border. In Boca Chica, during a visit to the sprawling SpaceX campus,聽</span></span></span></span>students met with residents in government partnerships and discussed their views on how SpaceX impacts their community.</p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he meetings we had gave insight and were candid discussions,鈥 said Chris Williams, a student in the Schar School鈥檚 </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/masters-programs/global-commerce-and-policy-ma"><span>Master of Global Commerce program</span></a><span>. Williams added that anybody immersing themselves in a degree with a global perspective should seek out study abroad opportunities. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>A significant component of the trip was a visit to the political capital of Mexico City and the National Aut贸nomous 麻豆国产 of M茅xico (UNAM), where students engaged in conversations with decision makers and attended lectures. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淢exico is having elections in June this year,鈥 Correa-Cabrera said. 鈥淭he U.S. is having them in November. We put these elections in context for the students.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Upon arriving in Mexico City, </span></span></span><span>the students received a briefing from <span><span>Miguel Siliceo, the senior economic advisor to Mexican President Andr茅s Manuel L贸pez Obrador.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>On International Women鈥檚 Day, the cohort of students was officially welcomed by the president of the federal senate of the Republic of Mexico, who recognized them from the Senate floor, followed by a meeting with a Mexican senator. The students said they gained insights from Mexican officials and policymakers on mutually shared challenges, as well as new avenues for cooperation and engagement. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e had ridiculous access on this study abroad, from [President L贸pez Obrado鈥檚] senior economic advisor to a legislative briefing at the Mexican federal senate by the vice president of the Senate,鈥 said Willaims. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Students met with a panel of diplomatic staff at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and received an interactive briefing on the challenges in the upcoming presidential election. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he five speakers at the embassy was my favorite session,鈥 said Anduela Johnson, a student in the Schar School鈥檚 </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/programs/masters-programs/international-security-ma"><span>Master of International Security program</span></a><span>. 鈥淚t was interesting to hear how they are managing security issues and balancing economic implications.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭hey see the relationship with the U.S. and our shared border differently. The entire experience was a true joy,鈥 said Johnson. On topics ranging from security and trade policy to the challenges of the upcoming election with two female candidates, each discussion sparked fascinating discussions and means for collaboration between the sets of students. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淢y favorite part of this trip <span>was hearing many perspectives,鈥 said Gabe Dole, one of the undergraduates on the trip and a student in the Schar School鈥檚 </span></span><a href="https://catalog.gmu.edu/colleges-schools/policy-government/government-international-politics-ba/"><span>Government and International Politics major</span></a><span><span>. 鈥淚 really valued the range of perspectives we heard.鈥 </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he Schar School of Policy and Government offered two complimentary study abroad programs to the U.S. Mexico border this spring,鈥 said Malur. 鈥</span><span><span>The fact they were both at the border is a testament聽to the Schar School being a policy school and offering our students the opportunity to hear and see firsthand policy debates and consequences of policies in action.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><em><span>Study abroad opportunities are important to a Schar School education, no matter the level or degree program. <a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/current-students/study-abroad">Trips include programs in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Students enjoyed three days of workshops, distinguished speakers, and learning鈥攁ll in the frame of public policy communication.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Schar School organizers, who partnered with the not-for-profit PPIA 鈥斅爓hich is devoted to diversifying the future pipeline of public policy professionals 鈥 reported that the students came from 13 states and 24 universities. I even had the opportunity to share an excerpt of my op-ed and receive feedback from Symone Sanders-Townsend, host of <em>Symone</em> on MSNBC.鈥澛</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Beyond meeting with Sanders-Townsend, who many students noted as a highlight of the weekend, students also met with Axios鈥 Fischer, who offered insights in the changing dynamics of the media world, and <em>NewsHour</em>鈥檚 Barr贸n-L贸pez, who described the fast-paced and hectic news environments the White House operates within.聽</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>鈥淎fter presenting my op-ed to the conference, the distinguished guests, and faculty, along with the students, gave me useful ideas to truncate and implement stronger direction in my rhetoric,鈥 said Blaine Greene II, who attends St. Mary鈥檚 College of Maryland. 鈥淎s an English major with a political science minor, I sometimes feel like an idealistic rube or a country bumpkin, yet I was unbelievably proud to be in the presence of this group of the world's greatest students.鈥澛</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The Public Policy Weekend also provided the students an exclusive opportunity to聽<a>gain</a>聽a sneak peek at what it鈥檚 like to study public policy at聽<a>the Schar</a>聽School.聽</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>鈥淭he program is mutually beneficial to students and faculty because each get a head start at building relationships that will serve them throughout a two-year program,鈥 said Professor Victor, who participated in the mentorship lunch-table segment, a series of small, casual discussions with Schar School faculty providing insights into the public policy world.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>鈥淏eing a Schar [School] student means being well-connected to different political resources, amazing faculty, outside opportunities, and programs like PPIA,鈥 Grabovska said. 鈥淢y advice would be to stay in touch with connections that you make within [the Schar School]. If you are in touch with your academic advisor, they might send you some cool classes or workshops. Victor, who also entered a PhD program straight after undergrad, said it is not an entirely unusual pathway for students to follow, but not many Schar School students have made it their goal the way Strasberg did. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>One of the strategies that Strasberg followed was to take more quantitative methods classes than were required in his bachelor鈥檚 program. Quantitative methods classes teach students how to collect, analyze, and interpret numerical data, which can be vital in working in or teaching in the public administration field.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>In addition to benefiting his application profile, he also found that he liked the courses. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>His professors took note of his ambitions and his extra effort and began to recommend him for undergraduate research; they also enabled him to take graduate-level courses.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>鈥淎ndrew decided a few years ago that a political science PhD was his goal, and he has pursued it with tenacity,鈥 Victor said. 鈥淗e took extra courses, sought mentorship from multiple faculty, and deliberately included research-oriented activities into his personal curriculum.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>Under the mentorship of Victor, as well as Schar School professors </span></span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/profiles/lnunez6" title="Lucas Nunez's Profile"><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN">Lucas N煤帽ez</span></a><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span> and </span></span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/profiles/emcglinc" title="Eric McGlinchey's Profile"><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN">Eric McGlinchey</span></a><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>, Strasberg presented his original research at the Midwest Political Science Association conference in Chicago in 2022 and 2023. </span></span><a href="/news/2022-10/what-drives-sports-fan-researching-rise-ultras-european-soccer" title="What Drives a Sports Fan? The paper, 鈥</span></span><span>Hooligans or Honchos? Developing a Political Theory of European Ultra-ism,鈥 was a study of soccer fan behavior; Victor remarked his findings in sport could be applied to a wide range of fields.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>This semester, Strasberg won first place in the Schar School鈥檚 </span><a href="https://schar.gmu.edu/current-students/academic-advising-student-services/undergraduate-student-services/undergraduate-13" title="Schar School Undergraduate Research Assistant Program"><span>Undergraduate Research Assistant Program</span></a><span> competition.
