Through the Fit2Serve program, Martin hopes to give tactical athletes the support and resources they鈥檙e missing.聽</p> <p>Fit2Serve began through an <a href="https://oscar.gmu.edu/">Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research</a> (OSCAR) summer impact grant. Martin works with student researchers in Mason鈥檚 <a href="https://smartlab.gmu.edu/">Sports Medicine Assessment Research and Testing (SMART) Lab</a> on the SciTech Campus to provide fitness testing and wellness resources for tactical athletes and looks for solutions for their specific challenges. 聽</p> <p>鈥淚 think a lot of us know someone involved in military or emergency response,鈥 Martin said, 鈥渁nd we don鈥檛 always appreciate the challenges those professions experience, both day-to-day and long term.鈥</p> <p>Fitness, Martin said, is more than exercise鈥攕leep, diet, mental wellness, and everyday physical activity all play a role. By improving overall fitness, Martin hopes to improve tactical athletes鈥 ability to complete occupational tasks and their health and longevity, as well as prevent injuries. For firefighters especially, there is a critical need for better resources, education, and research in these areas.聽</p> <p>鈥淧ost-retirement mortality rates for firefighters are, on average, much higher than the rest of the population, due to the high physical demands of their jobs, high potential for injury, and consequences of poor sleep and wellness while on active duty,鈥 Martin said. 鈥淲e want to improve that statistic.鈥</p> <p>His research team uses tools such as sleep surveys and real-time fitness monitoring during training exercises to make holistic recommendations for first responder wellness strategies.聽</p> <p>鈥淚t鈥檚 useful for them to understand the physical demands of what they鈥檙e doing in order to make more informed decisions that will hopefully prevent extreme fatigue and injury in the long run,鈥 Martin explained.</p> <p>Their work is already making an impact. After a controlled burn training with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, for example鈥攚here Martin and his team examined the extreme physical load placed on the individuals setting up the burn using wearable biosensors鈥攖hey were able to provide objective data to support a command decision by the fire department to reduce the length of the training from full days to half days. Martin hopes that an upcoming load monitoring study will lead to firefighter schedule adjustments to prevent extended sleep deprivation; many work 24-hour shifts, which leads to disrupted sleep cycles and degraded fitness. This study will be the dissertation for PhD student Mike Toczko.</p> <p>Another arm of Martin鈥檚 work is closer to home鈥攔ight on the Fairfax Campus, in fact: Mason鈥檚 Army ROTC program. He credits current PhD student Megan Sax van der Weyden for rebuilding the bridge between the SMART Lab and ROTC through their incorporation into the Fit2Serve program.</p> <p>Sax van der Weyden applied for Mason鈥檚 <a href="https://kinesiology.gmu.edu/academics/academic-programs/phd">PhD in Education with a specialization in kinesiology</a> because of the department鈥檚 established research with tactical athletes. As both a former student-athlete and ROTC cadet, she hopes to reduce the disparities between the available resources for these groups.聽<br /> 鈥淸As a student-athlete] I had dietitians, sports doctors, mental health counselors, and specialists creating our fitness plans and giving us pre- and post-workout routines,鈥 she said. 鈥淔or ROTC, you only had the upper-level cadets giving out whatever advice they had gotten from their upper-level cadets.鈥 More formal education backed by research would help to prolong cadets鈥 military careers and reduce risk of injury, she said.聽</p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq291/files/styles/medium/public/2024-04/img_7441new.jpg?itok=c20kCNkC" width="560" height="420" alt="Megan Sax van der Weyden measures ROTC cadet jump capacity" loading="lazy" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Megan Sax van der Weyden, seated on the bleachers, measures ROTC cadets' jump ability. And it鈥檚 good practice for distilling complicated theories and information into digestible components for an uninformed audience,鈥 said Sax van der Weyden.聽</p> <p>Along with providing fitness testing and health surveys for the battalion each semester, Sax van der Weyden delivers presentations on the importance of diet, fitness, and sleep, and is currently working on an online learning database for tactical athletes that she hopes will last long beyond her time at Mason.聽</p> <p>Martin said many students find the Fit2Serve program provides them with a new outlook on how they can make an impact.</p> <p>鈥淚 see a lot of students come into the kinesiology program thinking they want to do sports medicine, and then transition to tactical athlete research after working with emergency responders,鈥 Martin said.</p> <p>鈥淚t makes me smile watching them learn that they can make a difference in this field.鈥澛<br /> 聽</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region George Mason 麻豆国产鈥檚 <a href="https://cec.gmu.edu/">College of Engineering and Computing</a> working toward his master鈥檚 in data analytics engineering, has learned anything from his lengthy career, it鈥檚 that he can never count himself out.聽</p> <figure role="group" class="align-right"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img " loading="lazy" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Photo provided.聽</figcaption></figure><p>Vega鈥檚 path starts with a dream: to become an Army officer. He enlisted in the Army National Guard almost 15 years ago and pursued his undergraduate degree at The Ohio State 麻豆国产 while enrolled in their ROTC program. Degree planning is an important component of being commissioned as an officer upon graduation; switching majors made it difficult for Vega to meet the required standards within the few months prior to graduating.聽</p> <p>After earning his undergraduate degree, he continued his work with the Army National Guard, first with Florida (FLARNG) and then with Virginia (VAARNG). 鈥淚t was all about timing,鈥 Vega said of the wait to become an officer. 鈥淓verything happens for a reason, so I was just waiting for the right opportunity to take that next step toward being commissioned as an officer.鈥澛</p> <p>In 2018, Vega was accepted into the newly formed 91st Cyber Brigade, the Army National Guard鈥檚 first, and only, cyber brigade. 鈥淚 had developed an interest in the coding, data science, and artificial intelligence side of things during my work in military intelligence with the Army National Guard and in my civilian career developing and integrating artificial intelligence/machine learning and cyber solutions to both public and private sector,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he Cyber Brigade felt like the right move.鈥澛</p> <p>It was. The connections he made in the 91st encouraged him to pursue commissioning through ROTC, for which he was still eligible. 鈥淚 decided to knock two things out at once: officer status and a master鈥檚 degree. Mason had both a good <a href="https://arotc.gmu.edu/">ROTC program</a> and a strong artificial intelligence and machine-learning education pipeline.鈥</p> <p>So how does one become the number one ROTC cadet in the nation? Through the Order of Merit List (OML), which ranks every cadet via a points system. Throughout the year, Army ROTC Cadets earn points in different categories for various activities and accomplishments. These categories鈥攕uch as physical fitness, GPA, athletics, extracurriculars, and employment status鈥攈ave varying weights and point values within those categories. For example, extracurricular involvement overall is not weighted as heavily as GPA and STEM academic alignment (also known as degree pathway), so leading multiple clubs won鈥檛 necessarily balance out a low GPA.聽</p> <p>At the end of the Army fiscal year, the points are tabulated, and every ROTC cadet across the nation is ranked based on their overall accessions point value, creating the OML. OML rank is more than just an achievement: higher ranking cadets on the OML will have a higher chance of receiving their first pick of branch preference upon commissioning.聽</p> <p>鈥淚 was surprised. Shocked, honestly,鈥 Vega said, of the announcement that he ranked number one. 鈥淚鈥檓 not as fit as my younger members; I didn't think I had a chance. It just goes to show what you can accomplish with the right support."</p> <p>That refrain of support was critical to Vega鈥檚 success: not only the support he received, but the support he was able to provide.聽</p> <p>Mason鈥檚 ROTC program, Vega said, has supported him and his commitments to full-time employment with his civilian career as Lead Data Scientist (AI/ML), part-time with the National Guard, his growing family, and his rigorous graduate studies. As a university renowned for providing veterans with quality education, Mason鈥檚 support of post-traditional students in ROTC is yet another testament to the university鈥檚 commitment to inclusive and accessible education and career opportunities.聽</p> <p>鈥淗aving been in ROTC at another institution, I can say that Mason ROTC鈥檚 flexibility and adaptability is incredible. And my advisor in CEC has worked hard to find classes for me that will make sure I complete the degree on time while being able to work full-time and fulfill all my duties as a cadet, a husband, a father, and a member of the VAARNG.鈥澛</p> <p>And for Vega, he paid that support forward through his own informal mentoring of the other cadets. 鈥淏eing further along in life, I had a lot I could teach them. And the commissioned and noncommissioned officers in our program encouraged that transfer of knowledge. It helped all of us, me learning from them and them learning from me.鈥</p> <p>Vega looks forward to walking across the stage at Spring Commencement 2024 with his peers, with a plan to finish his degree over the summer. His future, hopefully as a soon-to-be commissioned officer, is bright.聽</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="b8ccae6c-2c69-47bb-b60a-f9b56df6e055"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://cec.gmu.edu/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Start your own journey with the College of Engineering and Computing <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="43d5a1b2-691b-4b39-b4ff-ef992264a9ee"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://arotc.gmu.edu/"> <h4 class="cta__title">Learn more about George Mason Army ROTC <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="b6008ccf-4606-4efd-84e4-8e0f7c058f91" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:news_list" data-inline-block-uuid="18c4b0c9-3710-447a-b4dc-1933d8c2091a" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocknews-list"> <h2>Related News</h2> <div class="views-element-container"><div class="view view-news view-id-news view-display-id-block_1 js-view-dom-id-5c9aeacc72d529d837c43352db0664ee5e43f669adaa19f66cb161c3ba0a05eb"> <div class="view-content"> <div class="news-list-wrapper"> <ul class="news-list"><li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/generous-gift-will-name-school-computing-support-scholarships" hreflang="en">Generous gift will name School of Computing, support scholarships</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 28, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/campus-greenhouse-powered-sun-and-student-innovation" hreflang="en">This campus greenhouse is powered by the sun鈥攁nd student innovation</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 25, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/george-mason-bioengineering-teams-start-next-wave-athletic-rehabilitation-and" hreflang="en">George Mason bioengineering team鈥檚 start-up is the next wave of athletic rehabilitation and performance</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 22, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/4-va-team-studies-wastewater-treatment-systems" hreflang="en">4-VA team studies wastewater treatment systems </a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 17, 2025</div></div></li> <li class="news-item"><div class="views-field views-field-title"><span class="field-content"><a href="/news/2025-04/announcing-recipients-2025-presidential-awards-faculty-excellence" hreflang="en">Announcing the recipients of the 2025 Presidential Awards for Faculty Excellence</a></span></div><div class="views-field views-field-field-publish-date"><div class="field-content">April 16, 2025</div></div></li> </ul></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="f26d1af9-ec7b-4e9f-a22c-1e566b5efff7" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:text" data-inline-block-uuid="f34259d1-5f0a-40b7-bdf7-49747c899785" class="block block-layout-builder block-inline-blocktext"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><hr /><p>聽</p> <p><em>This content appears in the Summer 2024 print edition of the </em><strong><a href="/spirit-magazine" target="_blank" title="Mason Spirit Magazine">Mason Spirit Magazine</a></strong> <em>with the title "The Top ROTC Cadet in the Nation."</em></p> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="811ffb1d-3e4d-4dc3-bd60-064d38a9b949"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="/spirit-magazine"> <h4 class="cta__title">More from Mason Spirit Magazine <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 14 Feb 2024 14:36:12 +0000 Sarah Holland 110721 at EIP graduate made the most of his time at Mason /news/2023-06/eip-graduate-made-most-his-time-mason <span>EIP graduate made the most of his time at Mason</span> <span><span>Colleen Rich</span></span> <span>Wed, 06/07/2023 -
