Campus Notice: Mason Day Is Friday, April 25

George Mason �鶹�� will celebrate Mason Day on Friday, April 25, from 3–10 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus. The event will feature a carnival with rides, games, treats, food trucks, inflatables, novelties, and performances. Admission is free for students, faculty, and staff with a valid George Mason ID. Guest tickets are available at the EagleBank Arena box office.

The event will take place from 3–10 p.m. in Parking Lots L and A near EagleBank Arena. Plan your trip with shopMason’s guide to Mason Day.

Parking and Traffic Advisory
Expect increased traffic on and around the Fairfax Campus. Lot L will be closed from Sunday, April 20, at 11 p.m. through Sunday, April 27. The western side of Lot A will be closed starting on Tuesday, April 22, at 1 p.m., and will reopen Sunday, April 27. Po River Lane between Roanoke River Road and Lot A will be closed on Friday, April 25.

Signage has been posted in affected areas. Any vehicles left in Lot L after 11 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, will be relocated at the owner’s risk and expense. If you have purchased a daily, weekly, or monthly Lot L and K permit, please park in Lot K during this time. Get more details from Parking and Transportation.

Celebration of Student Scholarship and Impact

The event will feature poster presentations, musical performances, videos, food trucks, and more. This event is presented by the Office of Student Creative Activities and Research (OSCAR).

Travel Well Vaccine Clinic: Vaccines for International Travelers

The Travel Well Vaccine Clinic provides travelers with a convenient opportunity to get up-to-date on routine vaccines and receive any recommended travel-specific immunizations. The clinic will take place on Tuesday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus, Peterson Hall, Population Health Center. Advance registration is required. Sign up today. This clinic is organized by Employee Health and Well-Being.

Mason Square Markets have returned for the spring season. Community members will find goodies such as handmade items, sweet treats, art, and more, while enjoying performances from local musicians.

‘Spheres of Engagement’

Spheres of Engagement is an innovative and collaborative performance project between the Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music and the �鶹�� Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Spheres Project, a collaborative music ensemble, will perform new student compositions inspired by the Special Collections Research Center. Spheres of Engagement is coordinated by June Huang, director of the Spheres Project; Cindy Badilla-Meléndez, music and media librarian; and Andrea Reinkemeyer, director of composition. A reception will follow. Free admission.

Exhibit: ‘Cross-Pollination’

Held in conjunction with the opening of the Seed Library at Fenwick, Cross-Pollination explores the relationship between the earth’s natural elements and the creative process, featuring works by George Mason faculty. This exhibition draws on both the literal and metaphorical meanings of cross-pollination, emphasizing the continuous exchange between the organic world and artistic creation.

Curated by Gabrielle Tayac and Public History in Action students. Co-curated and designed by Mason Exhibitions.
This exhibition grew out of the “IndigenoUs Northern Virginia: Activating Local and Diasporic Native Identities at Mason” project of Alison Landsberg and Gabrielle Tayac. “Indigenous Northern Virginia” began with a Summer Research Institute of students who connected with diverse indigenous communities in Northern Virginia through experiential listening and dialogue. Join a closing reception for this exhibit on Thursday, April 24, from 7–9 p.m. in the Buchanan Hall Atrium Gallery.

Peace Week

In today’s global landscape, persistent conflicts, the escalating impacts of climate change, and the rise of artificial intelligence are significantly posing new dynamics for the stability of our global society. These challenges necessitate a fundamental rethinking of the concept of peace and how it can be achieved and sustained.

Encourage Students to Participate in the Campus Climate Survey

George Mason faculty and staff should encourage their students to participate in the Campus Climate Survey. Students will have an opportunity to provide feedback and opinions on their experience at George Mason, providing insights for future developments on campus. The survey should take approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. All respondents are entered in a giveaway for a chance to win Mason Money, a gift card to the George Mason Bookstore, or a choice of Dell laptop or MacBook.

April Is Earth Month

Mason Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists in cities around the world to raise money for food-related charities that feed the hungry in their communities. All funds raised through George Mason Empty Bowls will be donated to the Student Food and Housing Insecurity Fund, which serves George Mason students experiencing food insecurity.

Mason Empty Bowls will be hosted on Wednesday, April 30, from 6–9 p.m. at the Center for the Arts on the Fairfax Campus. The event includes dinner, dessert, and sounds of Green and Gold Soul. Guests will choose a handmade bowl to take home as a reminder of the students in our community who struggle with food insecurity. For more information and purchase tickets, visit the website.

Freedom and Learning Forum

The Freedom and Learning Forum is an interactive dialogue series featuring the university president and thought leaders from around the world. The program emphasizes that freedom and learning are mutually interdependent and that one cannot happen without the other.

Annual Tornado Drill: Tuesday, April 8

George Mason employees are encouraged to participate in the annual tornado drill on Tuesday, April 8, at 10 a.m. This drill is a great opportunity to refresh your understanding of tornado response procedures. To prepare, take a moment to review George Mason’s Tornado and Severe Weather Guide.

Fenwick Fellows Lecture Series

Join �鶹�� Libraries on Tuesday, April 8, from 2–4 p.m. for presentations of research findings by George Mason �鶹��'s Fenwick Fellows: Jesse Kirkpatrick, research associate professor of philosophy; Huwy-min Lucia Liu, associate professor of anthropology; and Amaka Okechukwu, associate professor of sociology. Lectures will occur on the Fairfax Campus in the Fenwick Library Main Reading Room (2001).

The Fairfax Campus event features a carnival with rides, games, delicious treats, food trucks, inflatables, novelties, performances, and more. The Student Involvement team invites faculty/staff to volunteer to help facilitate Mason Day on Friday, April 25. View volunteer opportunities and sign up.

Introducing the Spiritual and Interfaith Center

The new Spiritual and Interfaith Center at George Mason �鶹�� offers a serene and inclusive environment for reflection, meditation, and connection. Located on the Fairfax Campus in Fenwick A Wing, this multi-level center is open to all students, faculty, and staff, providing a peaceful retreat from campus life.

The lower level features a quiet space for mindfulness and prayer, while the upper level offers a semi-quiet area for community engagement, conversation, and studying. George Mason faculty and staff are eligible to apply for the $250 scholarship to cover books, software, and supplies for George Mason courses. Eligibility requirements include:

“Successful,” “High-Performing,” or “Outstanding” rating in the most recent performance evaluation

Extending from this, his work evokes a very particular kind of imagined space: the sort of utopian vision of Palestine held by the displaced constituents that comprise the region’s diaspora.

When Prospero, a gifted sorcerer, and his young daughter, Miranda, are banished by his scheming brother, Duke Antonio, Prospero seeks shelter on a remote island and bides his time, waiting for the perfect moment to enact his revenge. A conjured storm shipwrecks Duke Antonio and his allies on Prospero’s island, offering him the opportunity he’s been awaiting. But love and magic throw a wrench into Prospero’s plans, and he must consider what matters the most in his quest for justice. Set in an alternate universe of artificial intelligence and virtual reality, this production will be directed by Rick Davis, dean of George Mason’s College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Known for their modern circus incorporating mechanical marvels, Cirque Mechanics introduces the wildly astonishing Pedal Punk, set in a Steampunk-inspired world where cycling provides wondrous escape from pervasive obsession with technology. In this production, Marvin the Mouse wants to be popular, but is constantly bullied by the “cool” rats. He retreats into his science books and a world of fantasy as respite, longing to have adventures and be the hero. Join Marvin on the space adventure of a lifetime: a trip to the surface of the moon on his homemade rocket where he meets a strange cast of misfit creatures and views awesome beauty in this cosmic adventure about celebrating differences. Board of Visitors Public Comment Session Scheduled for April 1

The George Mason �鶹�� Board of Visitors will conduct a meeting with a corresponding Public Comment session on Tuesday, April 1. This meeting will encompass a presentation by Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Deb Dickenson on Mason’s FY 2026 Tuition and Mandatory Fees. Details specific to the meeting and the public comment process are available on the Board of Visitors website.

President's Town Hall Sessions with Faculty/Staff

George Mason �鶹�� President Gregory Washington will host two 90-minute town hall sessions to discuss the state of the university and to engage with faculty and staff.

The town hall for employees working in nonacademic units will take place on Tuesday, March 25, at 1:30 p.m., on the Fairfax Campus, The Hub, Ballroom.

For those unable to attend in-person, the session will be livestreamed on Zoom. Contact your respective unit leadership for Zoom link and password. While questions will be taken at the conclusion of the town hall, the Zoom chat function will not be enabled. Should virtual attendees have any questions, please provide them to your designated unit contact so they can be shared in-person during the town hall session. Learn more.

MMR Vaccine Clinic: Thursday, March 27

The Employee Health and Well-Being division of Risk, Safety, and Resilience is hosting a Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine clinic on Thursday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Fairfax Campus in the Population Health Center in Peterson Hall. This clinic is open to George Mason faculty, staff, and their families insured under Aetna and Anthem BCBS. Others should verify coverage with their provider. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Register for an appointment.

Her research has made substantial contributions to improving the lives of families by identifying modifiable factors associated with parenting and how culture influences parenting in Latino families.

Mogro-Wilson is the editor-in-chief of Families in Society: The Journal of Contemporary Social Services, a core journal in social work research. She is co-PI on four federally funded five-year grants totaling more than $20 million from the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Swipe4Change: Addressing Food Insecurity One Swipe at a Time

Swipe4Change is a collaborative effort between Mason Dining and the Student Support and Advocacy Center, with support from �鶹�� Sustainability, the Food Recovery Network, and Student Government. Together, participants address food insecurity by collecting and allocating donated guest swipes to students in need.

On Wednesday, March 26, find donation stations on the Fairfax Campus at Southside and Ike’s from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Meal plan holders can donate a guest swipe, while non-holders can contribute any amount through Coins4Change at retail locations. Nominations for the Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Relations

The Jack Wood Award highlights the outstanding contributions of faculty, staff, students, businesses/not-for-profits, community members, and elected officials/staff who demonstrate leadership in fostering mutually beneficial relationships between the university and the community.

This distinction honors former Mayor Jack Wood, who played an instrumental role in establishing George Mason in the City of Fairfax and establishing town-gown relations between the university and the community.

Women's Basketball at the A-10 Tournament: Road Trip to Henrico

The George Mason women’s basketball team competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament this weekend, with their first game set for Friday, March 7, at 5 p.m., at the Henrico Sports & �鶹�� Center in Glen Allen, Virginia.

George Mason �鶹�� alum (Doctor of Musical Arts ‘21), Dewberry School of Music professor, and recipient of a Young Alumni Commissioning Award (’23), Juan Megna showcases musical influences from across the Americas with the Juan Megna Trio. The Argentinian-born percussionist/drummer studied music at the State �鶹�� of Campinas in São Paulo, Brazil, before continuing his musical and educational odyssey in the United States. At George Mason, he leads the School of Music Latin American Ensemble. The Juan Megna Trio will perform a mix of Megna’s original compositions, blended jazz, Argentinian and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, JigJam, “the best Irish group in bluegrass” (Irish American News), guarantees foot-stomping, heart-pounding feel-good tunes. The quartet made its Grand Ole Opry Debut in 2023 to a sold-out crowd, where they were joined by Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Steve Earle, and Lauren Alaina, among others. These talented multi-instrumentalists have released three albums and are winning over audiences with their infectious blend of bluegrass and American folk. Celebrate the rich musical heritage of the Irish with “Ireland’s answer to New Grass Revival” (Midwest Records).
