So far, university leaders have identified about 25 executive orders that could impact George Mason.

Washington and his leadership team have developed the George Mason Resilience Plan. The plan calls for the university to be prepared for constant change and to reprioritize as necessary, clearly articulate the common good of existing practices and programs, and to form and strengthen partnerships with industry, government and other institutions of higher education.

鈥淔irst and foremost is to聽stay true to our core values and our North Star,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淭here are seven core values that define our institution: 麻豆国产 students come first. Innovation is tradition. We are careful stewards. We thrive together. Diversity is our strength. We honor freedom of thought and expression. And we act with integrity.聽

鈥淎t any time when I am challenged and this institution is challenged as an entity, you refer back to those values so that you can get grounded in terms of how you should respond.鈥

Washington said that during the past year-and-a-half the university has extensively reviewed its systems, and an initial review of its policies and practices, the university affirms its commitment to meet all federal mandates as articulated in federal law, as well as recent executive orders and federal agency directives.

So far, the executive orders have resulted in 14 research projects out of the university鈥檚 700 active awards being paused or ended.

鈥淲e are really trying to position ourselves for the long game,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淲e are putting in systems, mechanisms, and infrastructure to deal with the next executive order, not the current one that鈥檚 in front of us. So putting in place systems like we鈥檝e 聽done with research and a number of other areas does not shield us from the effect of the executive order. But what it does do is that it helps us manage and mitigate it.鈥

As he does at each BOV meeting, Washington shared the progress on the presidential performance metrics, goals set for him by the board. He said that George Mason is meeting or exceeding 12 of the 14 performance metrics in the six priority areas. As part of that overview, he pointed out that聽the university has almost reached the halfway point of the billion-dollar goal in the Mason Now: Power the Possible comprehensive campaign, ahead of schedule, with a total of $497 million as of Feb. 17, further indication of community interest in fueling the university鈥檚 success.聽

鈥淢ason has raised over $100 million five times in its existence as a university,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淔our of them have occurred over the last five years.鈥

Washington also shared findings from the university-wide Grand Challenges Committee, a group working to pinpoint the research areas in which George Mason has significant expertise and that align with global grand challenges that are likely to attract external research funding in the coming years.

鈥淭he kinds of things that will be funded are the problems that are most critical to advancing our society and most critical to our way of life,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淲e need to have our faculty aligned and positioned toward those grand challenges because that鈥檚 where the opportunity space will be.鈥

The committee identified six focus areas:

Advancing 21st-Century Education for All鈥

Building a Climate-Resilient Society

Driving Responsible Digital Innovation and Sustainable Cyberinfrastructure鈥

Improving Human Health, Well-Being, and Preparedness鈥

Pioneering Space Exploration, Research, and Collaboration for Humanity鈥

Strengthening Peace, Trust, and Engagement in Democracy鈥嬄

鈥淭hese are not just challenges that we think will be prominent in the world coming ahead of us,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淭hese are challenges that are in alignment with Mason's strengths and are in alignment with our current aspirations. So these are areas [where] we know we can make an impact.鈥

Washington noted that the Life Sciences and Engineering Building, which will celebrate its grand opening on the Science and Technology Campus on March 27, and the Fuse building at Mason Square will be two of the university鈥檚 anchors for addressing the grand challenges.

鈥淲e are making an investment at a time when others will probably be retrenching to reposition our institution to be successful on the back end,鈥 Washington said. 鈥淭his is not new for us. We made strategic investments during COVID that positioned our institution to be stronger on the back end of COVID than it was going into it.鈥

Washington also provided a preview of his Mason 2050 plan that will be discussed in greater detail at the next full board meeting on May 1. The plan includes several major construction, expansion, and renovation projects for all three Virginia campuses, including a vision for the development of the western part of the Fairfax Campus, commonly referred to as West Campus. The Mason 2050 plan would utilize and build on the university鈥檚 strong partnerships with industry, government, and the philanthropy community.

==

Last week, Virginia Gov. Change is constant, and our ability to adapt and thrive in rapidly evolving environments depends on maintaining a learning mindset.

Another piece of advice I鈥檝e carried with me is about how to approach advice itself. Over the years, I鈥檝e been fortunate to receive guidance from incredible mentors and colleagues. But I鈥檝e also learned that advice can be a double-edged sword. It鈥檚 crucial to listen intently to advice, but equally important to know when to set it aside. To be authentic both personally and professionally, you need to filter advice through your own values and experiences. Advice can guide you, but blindly following it can lead you away from what makes you uniquely effective.

You began your career as a coder and worked your way up to CEO. But there were detours on your path. Is there a lesson in that for graduates as they begin their careers?

Absolutely. Career paths are rarely linear, and that鈥檚 a reality to embrace, rather than fear. Detours and unexpected turns present opportunities to gain new perspectives, develop resilience, and learn new skills.

Looking back, the moments where I adjusted course often ended up being the most formative and rewarding. My advice: Stay open to opportunities and remember that some of the most meaningful growth in your life and in your career can happen in the unplanned moments.

How would you say that George Mason鈥檚 perspective of 鈥淎ll Together Different鈥 helps prepare students for the workforce?

Diversity in all forms is an essential component of thriving institutions and societies, especially in its ability to spur innovation and progress. At CGI, we often saw that bringing together people with unique perspectives and backgrounds led to better solutions and greater outcomes for our company and for our clients. George Mason鈥檚 commitment to inclusivity prepares graduates to thrive in an interconnected and dynamic workforce. By cultivating collaboration and respect for different ideas, graduates are well-positioned to navigate and shape the future.

As a leading provider of tech talent, how does George Mason drive innovation and economic prosperity in Northern Virginia and throughout the state?

George Mason is a vital partner in cultivating talent that drives regional innovation and economic growth. We saw this firsthand when I was CEO at CGI as we relied on the skilled professionals emerging from programs at institutions like George Mason to deliver trusted business solutions for our clients. This partnership between academia and industry not only fuels local economic prosperity but also strengthens the foundation for future growth in technology and innovation.

President Washington believes companies and corporations need to offer more internships to better prepare graduates with the skills and experiences employers need. How does CGI succeed in this area, and how can that kind of mentorship be achieved on a large scale in our region?

I agree with President Washington. Done right, internships benefit both students and companies alike. Beyond simply gaining experience, mentorship during an internship helps students bridge the gap between theory and practice while learning from the perspectives of those with more experience, and companies gain fresh ideas and perspectives that students bring. To achieve this on a broader scale, collaboration is key. At CGI, we have seen that the greatest success is achieved when universities and companies work together to create programs that allow students and companies to engage with each other over longer periods of time with appropriate commitments on both sides. These programs create the opportunities that are both accessible and most meaningful.

Many George Mason graduates define career success not only by financial reward or job satisfaction but by bettering society through their work. What are some ways that students might be able to accomplish this goal?

At CGI, our consultants and technical experts are certainly motivated by the opportunity to use their skills to drive positive change for our clients, but also for our clients鈥 customers. We talk about our role in bettering society as being 鈥two steps away鈥 as it鈥檚 our role to partner with our clients to enable this positive change. For example, our direct client might be the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), but by assisting the EPA, we are also contributing to helping citizens across the country live in a healthier environment. Likewise, when working for a large financial institution on a program to assist the unbanked鈥攖hose people living in our communities who do not have bank accounts鈥攚e indirectly help this underserved population of people gain access to services that will make a difference in their lives and those of their families.

We also encourage all of our employees to lend their expertise to charitable organizations or individuals through STEM-focused programs, doing our part to enable a digitally inclusive society for everyone in our communities. I encourage you to challenge yourself and your places of employment to find ways for you to accomplish your goals to better society鈥攐ur society needs your contributions.

Forty years ago, George Mason partnered with area businesses to develop an engineering program geared toward the emerging information technology (IT) field. Given the prominence of IT in our regional economy today, what does this say about the impact of partnerships between George Mason and local industry?

It is clear that the partnership George Mason initiated at that time was a visionary one in terms of how collaboration between academia and industry can help shape regional economies. By aligning educational programs with the emerging needs of the IT field, George Mason and its partners certainly contributed to the role of Northern Virginia becoming the hub of technological innovation that it is today.

Such partnerships are critical in today鈥檚 world, where rapid technological change is accelerating faster than ever before. Preparing students to thrive in this environment requires a continuous dialogue between academia and industry to ensure that curricula and the experiential learning opportunities that companies can provide keep pace with real-world demands. When this collaboration aligns, it can enable future generations to not just respond to change but actively shape the future.

Connect with the Alumni Association

Related News

From Vietnam to Virginia: Duy Vu鈥檚 Remarkable Journey to the Commencement Stage

April 28, 2025

Student athlete brings passion for teaching to the mat

April 28, 2025

Spring 2025 Degree Celebration speakers

April 28, 2025

A Passion for the Past Pays Off: History Buff Christine Peretik's Timeless Internship

April 9, 2025

Rear Admiral Pamela Miller, highly decorated U.S. Navy medical officer, announced as College Degree Celebration speaker

April 7, 2025

Topics

Topics

Graduation

Winter Commencement

Campus News

Mon, 16 Dec 2024 13:56:55 +0000 Colleen Rich 115046 at George Mason BOV approves design for student-athlete center, adopts institutional neutrality principles /news/2024-12/george-mason-bov-approves-design-student-athlete-center-adopts-institutional George Mason BOV approves design for student-athlete center, adopts institutional neutrality principles Colleen Rich Wed, 12/11/2024 - The stated cons for adopting the principles included the necessity of George Mason needing such a policy given its existing framework for issuing statements, determining which issues require neutrality, and running the risk of the university community interpreting a lack of university response as indifferent or being a political statement in itself.

鈥淚 do think that what the provost described is a fair description of all the possible critiques of this type of policy,鈥 said Visitor Armand Alacbay, who favored adopting the Kalven Principles. 鈥淎t the end of the day, this policy is about people generally don't like being spoken for on things they鈥檙e passionate about. George Mason, to me, fit that bill. We accept on the order of the 90 percent of the undergraduates who apply and, unlike other places that have a similar broad-access orientation, our students graduate at a very high rate. George Mason鈥檚 admissions process attracts amazing students without being exclusionary鈥攚e open opportunities here. We also do incredible work with our graduate and professional students. Overall, this place is very student centered.

There's a whole host of things that I'm learning now that reinforces my decision to come here as being a good one. The faculty I've met are incredibly student-oriented. They care about teaching and about what they're doing in the classroom. They care about the kinds of experiences they're constructing for our students. And, they care about doing all that while continuing to elevate this place as a research university鈥攜ou might not find that same balance at other places. So, I keep finding more and more evidence that coming here was a great choice.

What are you looking to do in your first year?

I think there's nothing more important right now for a new provost than to come in and just hear the perspectives of faculty, of various kinds of leaders, to understand what's going on with our staff, to learn about our students, and to appreciate the cultures and the histories that embody this place. Over time, this listening will enable me to develop an agenda in terms of strategy and goals. I'm reading everything I can, and interrogating my own thinking about everything I believe I am learning so I can have what I hope are smart questions for folks when I ask them to explain things to me.

You were a first-generation college student, as are many George Mason students. How does that affect how you carry out your role?

The hallmark of my own first-gen experience was not really understanding how things worked. I was a slow starter, and it took me a lot of time to really learn how to navigate the university鈥檚 culture. At the same time, given my background, I knew how to be resilient in many ways. And I think this is true for many of our students here, as well. My sense is that first-gen students know how to get stuff done. A first-generation college student is somebody who has figured out how to navigate life鈥檚 complexities, and still get to our university鈥檚 doorstep. They are not coming here lacking in abilities or resourcefulness. Sure, they may not have family members or others in their immediate sphere who know how to help them navigate the university. And, they may lack financial resources. But in terms of personal commitment, smarts, and what we might call a 鈥渃an-do鈥 attitude, they're not lacking. Even so, we shouldn鈥檛 assume that they will readily navigate our institution in a seamless fashion. We have to make sure we create an educational environment that is supportive, and that allows them to reach their full potential.

One of President Gregory Washington鈥檚 goals is greater emphasis on grand challenge issues. How are George Mason faculty positioned for impact?

The George Mason faculty are positioned to have impact on grand challenges because they've already been having impact in ways that prepare us, as a university, to think about addressing big ideas. This is one of the youngest rising research universities in the country. This faculty as a collective has been steadily building its prominence as a research-based faculty with, frankly, a fraction of the resources that other universities enjoy. They are definitely getting noticed all over the country for the impact they're already having.

Provost James Antony welcome first-year students and their families during Move In. Photo by Evan Cantwell/Office of 麻豆国产 Branding

What if, while supporting them to do the work they are already excelling at, we were also able to strategically align our incredibly creative people around a set of issues that most could agree are so compelling that they will define the human condition for not just the next five or 10 years, but for generations to come? To me, that is the kind of question the framework of a grand challenge allows us to ask. It gives everybody a possible compass to direct some of what we do. It's not saying we only do the grand challenges鈥攚e still do the broad scholarship and creative work that represents the larger array of our interests. But, when possible, let鈥檚 imagine enabling the alignment of some of our folks鈥 work to tackle challenges that are bigger than George Mason.

What are your views on artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, and why is it important for George Mason graduates to be fluent in AI?

Research into artificial intelligence can provide opportunities for our scholars to define the future of AI, independent of its application. I鈥檓 talking about basic research that helps us understand AI and helps us shape AI and its associated technologies and possibilities. There are so many questions of a technical nature. But there are also questions of application and impact, not the least of which all-important considerations of the ethics and moralities around AI. I am excited by the possibilities of pure scholarship in all these areas, enabling our talented faculty and students to study AI in all of its instantiations and to do really good work helping society understand, and use, AI.

Another opportunity is for our university to figure out where partnerships might exist with industry. We obviously have to think about partnerships that make sense, where the university can leverage its expertise to bring something to bear that advances scholarship, the development of our students, and service to humanity. But we may also be able to learn from the way in which industry is approaching this work. And we can certainly explore creating partnership opportunities and programs that benefit our students and faculty. We have an ethical obligation to teach our students about all this, and we have many exciting opportunities to explore with a variety of partners. The good news is that we are fortunate to have many smart, super talented, people at George Mason who are leaders in this work. As provost, my job is to enable such people.

One of your many areas of expertise is graduate education. Any particular plans or thoughts about here at George Mason?

A world-class research university has thriving programs at the master's and doctoral levels, as well as professional degree programs that are top-notch. Graduate and professional education is something that, when done really well, provides an outcome to the student who's pursuing the advanced degree, but also provides faculty an additional dimension to do their core creative and scholarly work. Special things happen in an intellectual space that brings faculty and graduate or professional students into collaboration with one another. But there's also an impact on society. We need to make sure that we are putting together a robust array of graduate and professional programs that not only advance scholarship, but also have impact on the lives of the average person out there. Those with advanced graduate or professional degrees, like the students we are training at George Mason, go on to have positive impacts on the daily lives of every person in our broader community. As provost, I will work with faculty and other leaders to think about what a vibrant future for graduate and professional education looks like for the George Mason of the future.

You鈥檝e referred to George Mason being one of the most compelling institutions in the nation. How so?

What I see for George Mason is a future that will be positively stunning. We've got so much talent and potential that, on those dimensions, it will be hard to limit our possibilities. But, like many large public research universities, we will have to be strategic and creative when thinking about our future. The good news is we have a lot going for us. 麻豆国产 campus locations are ripe for development, and for becoming the kinds of built environments that, generations from now, will be leaps beyond what our founders could have imagined when we first opened as a university.

We are in one of the most compelling economic environments in the nation, not to mention within proximity to the nation鈥檚 capital鈥攚e have to continue building upon our successes leveraging our location.

At George Mason, we get to construct our own future. It's going to require lots of discussion, planning, and strategic thinking. It鈥檚 going to be a lot of work, and we will have to be bold. But I am so excited about being somewhere that has that kind of potential. For me, I like being in a place where the very best days lie ahead. I look forward to working with everyone to shape that amazing future.

聽

Did you know...

The Office of the Provost has primary responsibility for George Mason's academic mission, including supporting scholarly excellence among faculty members and fostering academic success for students on all four campuses.

Learn more about the Office of the Provost

Related News

Mason Korea and U.S. Embassy Seoul host Young Trilateral Leaders workshop

April 29, 2025

Generous gift will name School of Computing, support scholarships

April 28, 2025

Spring 2025 Degree Celebration speakers

April 28, 2025

This campus greenhouse is powered by the sun鈥攁nd student innovation

April 25, 2025

George Mason highlighted as one of Carnegie鈥檚 Opportunity Colleges and Universities

April 24, 2025

聽

This content appears in the Fall 2024 print edition of the Mason Spirit Magazine.

More from Mason Spirit Magazine

Wed, 28 Aug 2024 18:31:26 +0000 Colleen Rich 113596 at George Mason 麻豆国产 welcomes the largest new undergraduate class in its history /news/2024-08/george-mason-university-welcomes-largest-new-undergraduate-class-its-history George Mason 麻豆国产 welcomes the largest new undergraduate class in its history Colleen Rich Mon, 08/26/2024 -
