The Mason Nation’s strength was undeniable at several hackathons in spring 2023. Computer science, cybersecurity engineering, information technology, and mechanical engineering students won challenges on March 25 at the �鶹���� of Virginia, on April 7-9 at the �鶹���� of Maryland, and on April 29-30 at Drexel �鶹����.

Missy Cummings, a George Mason �鶹���� mechanical engineering professor, calls herself a “tech futurist,” whose job is to “make tech work. It’s not to stop tech, it’s to help it get better.”

The College of Engineering and Computing is offering many new classes at Mason Square in Arlington this year, including courses for the Graduate Certificate in Naval Ship Design.

Reigning senior national judo champion Yasmin Alamin is looking forward to launching her career in mechanical engineering in 2023.

For the first two weeks in August, students built and tested these maritime robotic vehicles at the Innovative Drive shop and lab facilities located near Mason’s SciTech campus. 

College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) Professor Janis Terpenny has joined the National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) where she will serve in the expert role and lead in the creation of CMMI’s Manufacturing System Integration program.

Last spring the college offered an interactive, discussion-based course that investigated the history of contributions by engineers marginalized by race or gender and studied cases where a lack of diversity contributed to adverse engineering consequences. 

Senior mechanical engineering students displayed their capstone projects during capstone day. The projects are a year long endeavor and prepare graduates for real world experience on the job.

Twice during the spring 2022 semester students enrolled in Mechanical Engineering (ME) 352 met virtually with industry executives to learn about everything from landing that first job to starting your own company.
