James W. “Jimmy” Hazel, JD ’84, has led a life of service to the Commonwealth of Virginia—and to George Mason �鶹����. He recently added to his considerable legacy with a gift of $1 million for the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation.

More than 250 people are working on the construction of the Fuse building at Mason Square, including George Mason �鶹���� rising senior Leslie Hernandez. “It’s my way of giving back to my school and community,” said Hernandez, who is majoring in civil and infrastructure engineering in the College of Engineering and Computing.

George Mason �鶹���� Police’s Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) teams supported the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) deployment to Appalachian Power in Ivanhoe, Virginia, over the weekend. The primary mission at Ivanhoe—between Carroll and Wythe counties—was to inspect two dams, built in 1912 and 1913, as well as the power distribution lines affiliated with them.

The new tenant, Cybastion, is an American technology company that delivers world-class cybersecurity and digital enhancement solutions to accelerate digital transformation in emerging markets, especially Africa.

In July, Charles “Cully” Stimson, JD ‘92, was elected as rector of the George Mason �鶹���� Board of Visitors. A businessman and attorney, Stimson is the deputy director of the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, Senior Legal Fellow, manager of the National Security Law Program, and senior advisor to the president at The Heritage Foundation.

George Mason �鶹���� School of Education professor Jennifer Suh was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in support of her project “Framework for Integrating Technology for Equity (FIT for Equity).” Working with Suh as coprincipal investigator is Theresa Wills, also of the College of Education and Human Development.

In recognition of former President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday on Oct. 1, George Mason �鶹����’s Board of Visitors (BOV) voted to award President Carter an honorary doctor of humane letters.

Recent media reports about the Scalia Law School running budget deficits do not take into account the full measure of what is required to operate a highly competitive, top-ranked law school under current conditions.

Center for the Arts engagement activities with Mason Artist-in-Residence Ballet Hispánico include a master class and classroom visits with George Mason students, workshops for area schools and community groups, Latin social dances for the public and Mason community, and a free school time performance.
